Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets completed a rigorous road stretch with the best defensive performance in NBA franchise history. Richard Jefferson scored 23 points and Kenyon Martin added 17 and nine rebounds as the Nets cruised to a 92-66 victory over the lowly Denver Nuggets. New Jersey has played nine of 11 games on the road in 2003 and finished the tough stretch with seven wins, including six on the road. The Nets finished a five-game road trip with consecutive wins after a dominant defensive effort. "I am glad it is over. We are ready to go home," Martin said. "I am glad we ended it the right way. This is a hard game to play, but it is what separates the good teams from the bad teams. We will take it." "We felt like we could have won all the games," Jefferson said. "We're not happy about our performance (on the trip). It makes the flight a bit easier when you've won the last two." Martin scored 13 points and Jefferson added 11 in the first half as New Jersey jumped out to a 41-26 lead. Denver's 26 first-half points matched the lowest for an opponent in Nets history. New Jersey allowed a franchise-record 66 points - one fewer than the previous low, set by the Washington Wizards on January 16, 2002. Lucious Harris scored 16 points and Anthony Johnson added a season-high 15 off the bench for the Nets, who completed the road trip at 2-3 after losing the first three games. "That was one of the prettiest games we have ever played," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "When our forwards play well we normally win." Vincent Yarbrough scored 13 points and was the only player in double figures for the lowly Nuggets, who have lost five in a row and eight of nine. Denver shot just 38 percent (21-of-56) from the floor and committed 32 turnovers - the most by an NBA team this season and six shy of the franchise record. "We were very sluggish and very sloppy tonight," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "I will take total responsibility for the way we played tonight. I take no positives from this game. We played very selfish, and we got very distracted. I am very mad with they way we played tonight and very disappointed." The Nuggets' frustration came to the surface in the in the second quarter, when forward Donnell Harvey was assessed a technical foul for arguing a call with an official. Juwan Howard - Denver's leading scorer - was ejected when he argued the technical that was called on Harvey. "When Juwan Howard got kicked out, it took way their post presence," Scott said. "When both teams play hard there will be some flare-ups. I thought the officials controlled the game as well as they could." "It is a long season. There are going to be ups and downs," Harvey said. "Being young, we had a lot of mental mistakes. This was our worst game." The Nets had a 23-18 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter before going on an 18-2 run. Martin scored six points during the burst and capped it with an alley-oop dunk for a 41-20 cushion with 1:53 to go. Johnson scored 14 points after halftime as the Nuggets never got closer than 15 points in the second half.
