Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Delta Center continues to be a house of horrors for the Golden State Warriors. Karl Malone had 26 points and 12 rebounds and John Stockton dished out 11 assists as the Utah Jazz extended their home winning streak over the Warriors to 17 games with a 102-94 victory. Golden State has not won in Salt Lake City since November 11, 1994 and is just 3-20 in the Delta Center since the the arena opened in 1991. The Warriors are just 12-50 on the road in the all-time series against the Jazz. Matt Harpring and Calbert Cheaney scored 16 points apiece as Utah extended its winning streak to three games and won its second straight without coach Jerry Sloan, who is serving a seven-game suspension for pushing on official during Tuesday's win at Sacramento. "I was worried about this game," acting coach Phil Johnson said. "(The Warriors) are very athletic. We were executing, we shot an excellent percentage from the field. So, as a team, I felt we finally got back and got established." The Jazz had their largest lead at 88-75 after a layup by Tony Massenburg with 8:17 remaining in the game. But the Warriors responded with eight straight points and pulled within 88-83 on a jumper by Troy Murphy with 6:31 to go. Utah was clinging to a 92-87 edge with 4:16 remaining before Harpring buried a jumper. Andrei Kirilenko made 1-of-2 free throws and Stockton buried a 3-pointer for a 98-88 cushion with 3:17 left. Malone sealed the win with a three-point play 73 seconds later and the Jazz held on for their seventh victory in their last eight overall meetings with the Warriors. Malone and Harpring combined to make 17-of-27 shots and Cheaney made 8-of-9 for Utah, which shot 55 percent (43-of-78) from the floor. "We didn't defend as well as we should have," Golden State Eric Musselman said. "Calbert Cheaney wasn't missing any shots. It's pretty hard to beat a team when they have starters shooting at such a high percentage." Murphy had 18 points and 11 rebounds and reserve Bob Sura scored 16 points for the Warriors, who lost for the third time in eight games despite having six players in double figures, including all five starters. "They've really improved in terms of how they play," Cheaney said of the Warriors. "They have some good shooters so you really can't key on just one person. They're very athletic and very talented." Antawn Jamison and Jason Richardson had 15 points apiece, Erick Dampier added 12 and Gilbert Arenas 10 as Golden State shot just 43 percent (35-of-82) from the floor and made only 1-of-8 3-pointers. "Every time we got it close, we'd take a quick shot or commit a turnover," Jamison said. "(The Jazz) know how to keep a lead ahead of people, especially in the fourth quarter. We didn't give up. We just kept fighting but it wasn't enough tonight." Richardson scored nine points in the first quarter as the Warriors carried a 31-29 lead into the second. The Jazz had a 51-50 edge with 2:21 left in the second quarter before scoring eight straight points. Harpring capped the spurt with a 3-pointer and a layup for a 59-50 cushion. Utah had a 59-52 halftime lead and Golden State did not get closer than four points in the second half.
