Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan made up for a lot of mistakes by the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan scored 17 points and grabbed a career-best 25 rebounds as the Spurs overcame a season-high 27 turnovers to edge the Miami Heat, 67-65. Tony Parker added 18 points for the Spurs, who improved to 3-1 on their marathon nine-game road trip, but needed some awful shooting by the Heat along the way. Miami took a whopping 92 shots, compared to just 56 for the Spurs, but made just 28 percent of them and failed twice in the final five seconds. "This was kind of a special one," Duncan said. "The Heat got 36 more shots than we had. We turned the ball over 27 times and only scored 67 points after scoring a hundred for several games in a row. We are just happy to get the win." Travis Best, who sank a game-winning shot to defeat New York on Wednesday, missed a 3-pointer and rookie Caron Butler missed a jumper before time expired. "It was just the plays at the end," Butler said. "We still had our looks. I had a great look and it just went in and out." Duncan set an NBA season high for rebounds and topped his previous career best of 23, done on three other occasions, most recently December 23 against New Orleans. Eddie Jones scored 17 points, Brian Grant chipped in 10 and 11 rebounds and Vladimir Stepania grabbed 14 boards for the Heat, who have lost four of their last five games. "It's getting old, losing all these close games. We got 30 more shots than them. We can't get a break," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "It's just a testimony to how hard my guys played. ... We played the game well, we just shot it poorly. We just needed to make another four or five shots." Miami's Malik Allen sank a 3-pointer to cut the Spurs' lead to 66-63 with 1:19 left. The Heat had a chance to tie after Duncan turned over the ball, but Jones was called for traveling with 45 seconds left. After a turnover by the Spurs' Stephen Jackson, Jones sank a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game. Parker made 1-of-2 free throws with 18 seconds left, setting the stage for the missed shots by Best and Butler. Duncan and Malik Rose each turned over the ball six times for the Spurs. "They are going to bite us in the butt if we don't take care of it," Duncan said. San Antonio survived by making 22-of-28 free throws, including 9-of-10 by Parker. "When we have trouble winning games, nine times out of 10 it's turnovers," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Sometimes we'll get beat on the offensive boards, and that isn't a huge deal, but the turnovers for us is a huge deal. That is why I feel very lucky coming out of here tonight with a win because we had so many turnovers." The Spurs led by as many as eight points in the first half, using baskets by Grant and Rose to take an 18-10 lead after one quarter. Miami finally found its touch late in the second quarter, using a 10-2 run to take a 32-31 halftime lead. Best had a pair of baskets and Butler sank a 15-foot jumper six seconds before intermission. The Spurs led by as many as six points in the third quarter, taking a 49-43 edge on a pair of free throws by Parker with 4:20 left.
