Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace had a solid game and then rested. Ricky Davis struggled and then sulked. Wallace scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half as the Portland Trail Blazers coasted to a 114-95 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his second game after a seven-game suspension for confronting a referee off the court, Wallace connected on 10-of-13 shots and pulled down seven rebounds in 33 minutes as the Trail Blazers won for the ninth time in 11 games and improved to 13-4 against the Eastern Conference. "We bring Rasheed back in the last two games and he's been (nothing) short of phenomenal," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. Davis, apparently upset after being replaced by rookie Smush Parker with 1:51 left, took a seat next to a few fans in the first row of the courtside seats. He scored 15 points but made just 6-of-20 shots and committed three turnovers in 39 minutes. Derek Anderson scored 13 points while Dale Davis and reserve Damon Stoudamire each added 12 for Portland. "We don't worry about blowing people out or not," Anderson said. "We just want to play hard and play the whole game." All-Star Zydrunus Ilgauskas had 20 points and eight rebounds and rookie Dajuan Wagner scored 15 points in 29 minutes off the bench for Cleveland, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games. "Throughout my short time here this is the best team (we've faced)," said Cleveland coach Keith Smart, who fell to 1-5 since replacing John Lucas. "They have a unique bench and a very talented group, getting along with each other and playing very well." Portland, which began a three-game road trip against teams from the East, got off to a strong start. Wallace scored 14 points in the first quarter, when the Blazers shot 59 percent (13-of-22) and grabbed a 34-16 lead. The Blazers had 11 assists on their 13 baskets in the first 12 minutes. Portland continued its hot shooting in the second half, making 11-of-22 attempts from the field, and going ahead, 60-43, when Bonzi Wells hit a fallaway jumper 24 seconds before halftime. "They are the most talented team in the NBA right now," said Cavs guard Darius Miles, who had 14 points and seven rebounds. "They are a veteran team and they know what it takes to win. They went into the game like they were trying to win a championship. They didn't want to see us beat them." Cleveland managed a 9-2 spurt to get within, 80-70, when Ilgauskas sank a 12-footer with 2:36 to play in the third quarter. But Wallace responded with a pair of free throws 32 seconds later to trigger a 9-0 run and Portland did not let the margin fall below 18 points in the fourth period.
