Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- All-Star Brad Miller scored 18 points and Reggie Miller continued his steady ascent up the all-time scoring list with 17 as the Indiana Pacers defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 83-72. Brad Miller followed up an 11-of-18 shooting performance in Tuesday's win over Cleveland with an 8-of-14 effort. All-Star Jermaine O'Neal scored six points and Miller had four as the Pacers closed the second quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 43-31 halftime lead. O'Neal finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for Indiana, which led by as many as 18 in the second half en route to its second win in as many nights. "Going into the break, we had a tired team," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "We were physically exhausted. I knew that off the break, the team would respond." Reggie Miller scored 11 in the first half, including a jumper midway through the second quarter that moved him past Elgin Baylor into 17th on the all-time scoring list. Miller's 23,158 points leave him 19 shy of Adrian Dantley. "Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I'd be in this game for this long, or be amongst company like that," said Miller, who is in his 16th season. "It's something very special." Indiana lengthened its Eastern Conference lead to two games over the New Jersey Nets. "I like the position that we're in," Thomas said. "We wanted to put ourselves in a position to challenge for the East. It's the middle of the race now. We just have to stay focused and finish the race." Jamal Mashburn scored 18 points and Jamaal Magloire added 13 and a career-high 20 rebounds for the Hornets, who matched their season low in points and had a three-game winning streak halted. Both teams started slowly and shot under 30 percent from the field in the first quarter. The second-quarter shooting was equally atrocious until the Pacers got hot in the latter stages. After P.J. Brown's layup cut the Hornets' deficit to 31-29 with 4:28 left, Ron Mercer nailed a jumper and O'Neal followed with a three-point play. Brad Miller hit a jumper and Brown answered with two free throws before O'Neal sank a free throw and short jumper around a bucket by Miller with 61 seconds left in the half. Brown's layup was New Orleans' only basket in the final 6:14 of the half. He finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Both teams shot poorly. Indiana was 40 percent (29-of-72) from the field while the Hornets were a miserable 33 percent (27-of-82) in their first game back since the All-Star break. "Our shooting was pretty horrendous; we were off the mark," Brown said. "I also have to say that team is a very good team. We have played everybody in the East, and that team is the best." Ron Artest collected 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Jamaal Tinsley dished out eight assists for the Pacers, who host Atlanta on Friday before playing nine of their next 11 on the road. "When we get on a roll, it's hard to stop us," Tinsley said. "We prepared hard tonight." New Orleans got as close as 48-40 in the third quarter with Mashburn's driving layup, but the Pacers countered with a 10-2 run, taking a 58-42 lead on Miller's jumper at the 5:09 mark. In the fourth, the cushion dwindled from 18 points to 79-72 after Magloire's basket with 31 seconds to go, but that was as close as the Hornets would get. "When you shoot 32 percent, you're not going to beat many teams," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.
