Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose forced overtime, then forced the issue in overtime. Rose scored a season-high 38 points but was shut out in an awful extra session as the Chicago Bulls suffered their seventh straight loss, a disappointing 119-111 setback to the Philadelphia 76ers. "I felt like that once we got into overtime, I was irresponsible," Rose said. "I should have made a couple plays that I didn't make." Rose was remarkable in regulation, scoring 15 points in the third quarter and nine more in the fourth period as he led a pair of comebacks. The first erased a 10-point halftime deficit and the second saw the Bulls climb out of a 106-95 hole with 3:45 to go. With 7.6 seconds left in regulation, Rose dribbled from right to left before launching a 15-footer over Eric Snow that forged a 109-109 tie. That capped a 14-3 surge and appeared to give the Bulls momentum heading into overtime. But Rose's touch disappeared. He forced a jumper after two free throws by Aaron McKie gave Philadelphia the lead, then fired an airball 3-pointer after a leaner in the lane by Keith Van Horn made it 113-109. After Allen Iverson made two free throws, Rose shot another airball, then banged a long 3-pointer off the backboard. "It looked like he got a little tired and he ran out of gas," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. A follow shot by Van Horn made it 117-109 with 1 1/2 minutes left before a drive by Jamal Crawford ended Chicago's overtime drought. Rose added a bad pass in the final minute. "That's my job. That's why they got me here," Rose said. "If I'm going to be the leader of this team, it's dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. If somebody is going to answer questions about why it didn't get done in the overtime, then it needs to be me." Rose made 15-of-24 shots and handed out 13 assists. His playmaking made a star of Tyson Chandler, who dominated both backboards with 21 points, 17 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. "We really had a chance," Chandler said. "We just made some bad decisions down the stretch in the overtime." Chicago lost in overtime for the third time in its last four games. Overall, the Bulls have not won since January 26 and fell to 2-26 on the road. They are 0-6 in overtime this season. "It takes a lot out of you as a team," Rose said. "We've been trying to put ourselves into a position to win. For whatever reason, we're not getting the stops we need, the rebound we need, the basket we need, or the extra play we need to put us over the hump. That's the difference between a team that has a real good record or a team that's doesn't." Iverson scored 36 points for the Sixers (26-24), who again blew a late lead at home but held on to avoid dropping to .500 for the first time since Halloween. They posted their highest total of the season. The same problems continued to plague Philadelphia as it displayed poor defense in transition and half-court sets. Chicago shot 51 percent (42-of-83) and scored 20 fast-break points. "The Chicago Bulls come in and they're 2-25 on the road and we're in a dogfight with them," said Iverson, who had seven assists and four steals. "But we got the win and that's the most important thing." A baseline jumper by McKie gave the Sixers a 106-95 lead with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter. But Rose made two free throws and Chandler had a pair of hoops around a free throw by Iverson, cutting the deficit to 107-101 with 2:14 remaining. Rose and Donyell Marshall each made a pair from the line as Iverson missed a pair. Iverson drilled a jumper for a 109-105 lead with 53 seconds to go, but Chandler had a follow dunk and intimidated Van Horn into a miss before Rose's tying shot. "We didn't do the job the last three or four minutes," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "We missed free throws and some easy shots. They made plays. Fortunately, in overtime we had a lot of guys step up and we defended pretty well." Van Horn had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Kenny Thomas added 17 and 10 for the Sixers, who shot 44 percent (45-of-102). Snow had 15 points and 11 assists and McKie scored 12 points. Marshall had 21 points and 13 boards for the Bulls, who surrendered 28 points on 21 turnovers. Thomas scored 15 points in the first half as Philadelphia opened a 59-49 lead. Two free throws by Van Horn began the second half before Chicago ran off 12 straight points to tie it. A jumper by Rose gave the Bulls an 85-84 lead, but Iverson had two free throws and a runner around a dunk by Brian Skinner, giving the Sixers a 90-85 lead entering the fourth quarter. "We lost a lot of leads tonight," Van Horn said. "At the beginning of the third quarter, we lost a lead; in the middle of the game, we lost a lead; and at the end of the game, we did. We have to put teams away when we get them up by that many points."
