Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- At 37, Reggie Miller showed he can still carry the Indiana Pacers. Miller sank his seventh 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds left in overtime and Jermaine O'Neal supplied a huge block as the Indiana Pacers slipped past the Atlanta Hawks, 98-97. Indiana led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter but was forced to rally in both regulation and overtime. Miller, who passed Adrian Dantley to move into 16th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list, got free on the left wing and drained a 3-pointer that gave the Pacers a 98-97 edge. "When needed, they always call my number, I'm just glad I still have the grace to come through when they need me," Miller said. "Last year, we would have lost a game like this, and four or five after this." After a timeout, Atlanta's Jason Terry drove the lane and put up a short floater that was rejected by O'Neal as time expired. O'Neal had 19 rebounds and four blocks but scored just two of his 16 points in the second half as Atlanta center Theo Ratliff effectively shut down the middle. "I know Jason Terry pretty well," O'Neal said. "I know he works on that floater all the time, that's one of his specialty shots. I had to jump early, beacause he puts it up really high. My timing was perfect on that particular shot." Miller finished with 26 points and Brad Miller added 17 and 14 rebounds for the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers, who extended their home winning streak against the Hawks to seven games. "Reggie pushes off and hits a huge shot to win the game," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "All I can say is that he is a heck of a player." Glenn Robinson and Shareef Abdur-Rahim each scored 21 points and Ratliff collected 16, 14 rebounds and nine blocks for Atlanta, which has dropped four straight. Reggie Miller, who shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range, fueled the Pacers' 19-0 second-quarter run, hitting three three-point shots as Indiana rallied from a 36-33 deficit to take a 52-36 advantage. He capped the spurt with a 3-pointer. Indiana owned a 55-44 halftime lead and built up a 20-point third-quarter cushion before going cold from the field. The Hawks cut the deficit to 72-63 after three and took their first lead since the second quarter when Terry nailed a 3-pointer with 3:27 left in regulation. "We just have to keep fighting," Terry said. "We were definitely in a position to win, but they proved tonight why they are the toughest team in the Eastern Conference." Atlanta was behind, 87-85, in the final minute, but Abdur-Rahim's lay-in with 40 second tied it. After leading by as many as four points in overtime, the Hawks were clinging to a one-point edge when Reggie Miller missed an open jumper with 19 seconds left. Dion Glover was fouled and made 1-of-2 for Atlanta with 16 seconds left, setting up Miller's heroics. "It was a valuable lesson we learned tonight," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "How important, how fragile, the word 'Team' is. I thought (we) did a good job of regrouping." The win moved the Pacers to 3-0 since the All-Star break and 24-3 at home. Jamaal Tinsley collected 16 points and 12 assists and Ron Artest had 13 points for the Pacers, who shot just 36 percent (35-of-96) from the floor but sank 10-of-22 3-pointers thanks to Miller. The hard-luck Hawks have lost their past three games by a total of five points. They erased a 22-point deficit at Golden State on Tuesday before falling. "Once again, we play well, we just can't close out a win," Stotts said. Glover scored 13 for the Hawks, who shot 39 percent (35-of-89) from the field. A jumper by Artest at 9:14 of the third period gave the Pacers their biggest lead at 64-44.
