Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Shawn Bradley played up to his height in crunch time. Bradley scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks avoided their first four-game losing streak in nearly three years with a 110-103 victory over the pesky Memphis Grizzlies. A non-factor for the first three quarters, the 7-6 Bradley used his lanky frame to his advantage in the final period, getting inside for a number of easy baskets. "It was a matter of everyone having good spacing," Bradley said. "With the way we run our offense, when they're in the zone, if we do what we supposed to, there's gonna be openings. We were able to take advantage of them in the fourth quarter." After Mike Batiste made two free throws to pull the Grizzlies within two with 4:17 remaining, Bradley scored his team's next six points, giving the Mavericks a 106-99 lead with 2:48 left. He finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dallas improved to 27-0 the last three seasons when Bradley registers a double-double. Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and Michael Finley added 29 for Dallas, which avoided its first four-game losing streak since a six-game slide from February 29-March 9, 2000. After squandering an 11-point third-quarter lead, the Mavs built a 96-86 advantage with 7:13 left on two foul shots by Bradley. Dallas made all 20 of its free throws while Memphis went 26-of-36 from the line. Consecutive 3-pointers by rookie Drew Gooden and Michael Dickerson and two free throws by Batiste helped the Grizzlies close to 96-94 with 5:29 to go. It was still a two-point game with just over four minutes left when Bradley dunked off a pass from Steve Nash and followed with two foul shots. "It's about time he finished one of those," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "He actually dunked one, which was nice. We had their zone in a bind a few times and he needed to be where he was and finish the plays. So I was really happy to see that." Wesley Person split a pair from the line before Nash, who had 13 assists, fed Bradley for a layup, making it 106-99 with 2:48 to play. Nash also scored 16 points. "They really have a lot of great pieces," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "The point guards, who can dribble and make great passes, they can see the floor. And in their perimeter game, they can shoot better than Sacramento and maybe better because they've got more guys. Tonight they did a good job." In the fourth quarter, Bradley outscored Nowitzki and Finley, who carried the Mavs for the three periods. "Bradley was big today," Nowitzki said. "We need that more out of him, being a factor in the middle, blocking shots and rebounding. He was a big factor in winning the game today." Nowitzki scored 17 points in the opening half and had a pair of quick baskets in an 11-0 run to start the third quarter that gave Dallas its biggest lead at 65-54. But the Grizzlies answered with their best stretch of the game, using a 15-2 run, capped by Shane Battier's 3-pointer, to take a 69-67 lead. The Mavs had their own answer with an 18-7 surge to close the quarter, restoring an 85-76 lead. Nowitzki had five points to key the spurt. "We weren't surprised by them hanging with us until the end," Nowitzki said. "They played hard up until the end. We knew we needed a win. We had to get a win." Bradley and Nowitzki were not the only big men to find success inside for the Mavs. Raef LaFrentz had 12 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Pau Gasol scored 25 points and Jason Williams, returning to the lineup after missing a game with the flu, added 15 for the Grizzlies, who have lost eight of nine. The Grizzlies also fell to a lowly 1-14 all-time at home against the Mavs. "I thought we did a good job, we just couldn't get it done at the end," Gasol said. "It was very close, it was right there. We were competing with the best team in the league. We didn't take good shots at the end. We didn't make the right plays at the end."
