Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls found a way to offset another poor offensive showing. Tyson Chandler had 19 points and a career-high 22 rebounds and Jalen Rose totaled 27 and 10 as the Bulls dominated inside and snapped an eight-game losing streak with an 88-69 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Chicago shot just 41 percent (36-of-86) from the floor but held an overwhelming 61-41 rebounding advantage. The Bulls grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, including nine by Chandler, who matched a career high. "I came out with lively legs," said Chandler, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds in Wednesday's loss at Philadelphia. "I wanted to come out and have a good game. I did not know how many rebounds I had and that is probably a good thing." "When Tyson brings the energy and enthusiasm and athleticism, he has the capability of having games like he had tonight," Rose said. "He has emerged as one of our most consistent young players." Chicago used its dominance on the glass to score 32 second-chance points and added 26 points off 20 Denver turnovers. It was a nightmarish homecoming for Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik, an Illinois native and spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Northwestern University in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago. "I'd like to redo this game," he said. "We couldn't rebound the ball we're not tough enough to block guys out. They just outhustled us. We were just not competitive on the boards and a step slow." "This is home for Jeff, we knew it was special for him," Denver guard Chris Whitney said. "We wanted him to have some vindication for our record thus far and play well here in front of his family and friends. Unfortunately, we let him down." Rookie Lonny Baxter collected 13 points and eight rebounds as Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak to Denver and avoided matching its longest losing streak of the season. The game was tied, 52-52, late in the third quarter before the Bulls scored 23 of the next 25 points. Chicago opened the burst with 13 consecutive points as Denver went scoreless for more than six minutes. Rose, a former Nugget, scored the final four points of the third quarter and opened the fourth with a three-point play for as 65-52 cushion with 11:40 to go. He capped the dominant stretch with a jumper to give the Bulls a 75-54 advantage with 7:08 remaining. The Nuggets managed just 32 points on 31 percent (12-of-38) shooting in the second half. They shot just 38 percent (29-of-77) overall and made only 9-of-16 free throws. "I know what I'd like to say about tonight's game but I can't," Bzdelik said. "The game is much too hard when you can't make shots and have trouble handling the ball. We compounded that with a lack of rebounding. There's not too much else to say." Chicago native Juwan Howard collected 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost four in a row and 11 of 13. Denver has lost 11 consecutive road games and is just 3-23 away from the Pepsi Center, including 0-11 against the Eastern Conference. Whitney's 3-pointer gave Denver a 40-38 edge less than two minutes into the third quarter. But rookie Jay Williams responded with a 3-pointer and the Nuggets never reclaimed the lead.
