Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton, Ben Wallace and the Detroit Pistons made Gund Arena even quieter than normal. Hamilton scored 23 points and Wallace added 13, 16 rebounds and five blocks as the Pistons cruised past the Cleveland Cavaliers, 90-75, for their seventh victory in eight games. "He put on a display," Hamilton said of Wallace, who shot 5-of-7 and fell one point shy of his season high. "It's exciting because he works so hard on his game - he rebounds and he blocks shots. We all know what he can do. He was just knocking them down and he looked good." "I got some open shots and they went down tonight. There's something about Cleveland," said Wallace, who scores barely six points per game but has averaged 11 points and 18 rebounds in three games, all wins, against the Cavaliers this season. Chauncey Billups added 15 points and reserve Corliss Williamson 14 for Detroit, which moved within one game of the Indiana Pacers for the best record in the Eastern Conference. "A lot of people still underestimate us," Hamilton said. Detroit held just a 34-32 lead before closing the first half on a 17-6 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes. Williamson and Billups each scored six points during the burst, which Billups ended with a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the left corner. Behind 11 third-quarter points from Hamilton, the Pistons extended their advantage to 73-52 after 36 minutes and the Cavs got no closer than 14 points thereafter. "Sometimes when you are down 20 (points), you just get to the point where you are ready for the game to be over," said Cavs forward Darius Miles, who scored just four points - all on free throws - in 30 minutes. Ricky Davis scored 19 points and Milt Palacio added 13 for Cleveland, which lost for the 13th time in 15 games. All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was not much of a factor, scoring 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting, as the Cavs fell to 2-9 under interim coach Keith Smart despite holding the Pistons to just 40 percent from the floor. "I was disappointed with the effort, because you know that if you ran your offense and did things defensively with a team framework you are right there in the basketball game," Smart said. The Pistons, the league's best defensive team, limited the Cavs to 36 percent shooting (29-of-80) en route to their sixth straight victory in their head-to-head series. "Their shot-making wasn't what it's been the last couple of games (we've played them)," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "We controlled the tempo and played the way we wanted to play." "We played solid on the defensive end and made them take some tough shots, and we didn't give them a lot of second shots," Wallace said. Once again there were numerous empty seats at Gund Arena, where Cleveland's record is just 7-18. The Cavs have the worst record in the league at 10-43. Detroit was beginning a 15-day stretch in which it is playing 10 games, eight on the road. "This was the first of a difficult 10-game stetch," Carlisle said. "Nobody played heavy minutes, which is a plus. We play a Miami team which is sitting waiting for us (Monday night in Detroit)."
