Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Instead of coming up with another strong finish, the Boston Celtics were finished. The Celtics managed just one basket for a nine-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and suffered the first loss on their road trip, a 102-92 setback to the Phoenix Suns. Rookie Amare Stoudemire had 25 points and 17 rebounds for the Suns, who snapped a two-game home slide. Phoenix took full advantage as Boston - playing for the third time in four nights - simply ran out of gas. The Celtics had won the first three games of their six-game trip, the last two with late surges. They scored the final 12 points to beat Portland on Thursday and used a 14-2 closing run to turn back the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. But when Boston reached back for another gear against Phoenix, it was not there. After a 3-pointer by Paul Pierce gave the Celtics an 86-82 lead with 10:07 to play, they managed just one basket until Walter McCarty's layup in the final minute. By that time, the Suns had surged to a 100-90 lead. All-Stars Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion each scored six points during that stretch while the Celts managed just a hoop by Pierce and two free throws. Marion had 22 points and nine rebounds and Marbury added 20 and 12 assists for Phoenix, which improved to 3-2 on a season-high six-game homestand and swept the season series from Boston for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign.
