Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady wasn't making shots, so instead he made plays. McGrady's passing, defense and presence keyed a stunning 20-2 surge down the stretch as the Orlando Magic rallied for a 99-94 victory over the New Orleans Hornets that snapped a three-game losing streak. The NBA's leading scorer and one of its top players, McGrady endured one of his worst shooting games of the season. He made just 9-of-26 shots - and that included a 5-of-6 showing in the second quarter. Hounded by George Lynch and Stacey Augmon, McGrady scored 24 points but never really found a rhythm at the offensive end. But he did not allow that to impact the other facets of his game. "If you don't have it going offensively, somehow, some way you have to make it happen," McGrady said. "If it's getting guys shots or defensively, that's what I did." During the pivotal run that saw Orlando erase an 89-77 deficit with five minutes to go, McGrady repeatedly attracted the defense before passing to open teammates. His penetration and pass set up Darrell Armstrong's 3-pointer that tied it, 89-89, with 1:48 left. After Mike Miller's driving layup gave Orlando the lead for good at 93-91 with 1:05 to go, McGrady blocked a shot by Hornets All-Star Jamal Mashburn, leading to a free throw by Shawn Kemp. "(On Miller's basket), T-Mac had it, they forced him baseline and instead of forcing it, he throws it to Mike Miller and allows Mike Miller to come off of it, and Mike goes to the basket," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. On the next possession, McGrady poked away a pass intended for Mashburn and went in for an uncontested dunk that made it 96-91 with 26 seconds remaining. He added a free throw on the next possession to cap the surge. "I came down and made two big plays, got a block on Mashburn on one possession and the next possession, I got a steal," McGrady said. "It's just finding some way to make yourself effective out there on the basketball court." Miller scored 24 points and Armstrong added 15 for the Magic, who had lost the last four meetings with the Hornets. "That feels real good," McGrady said. "Now they see how it feels to have the lead the whole game and a team fights back and comes out with the victory. It's been done to us so many times, I know how it feels." "You win some that you shouldn't win maybe and you lose some that you shouldn't lose," Rivers added. Mashburn scored 20 points and David Wesley added 17 for New Orleans, which has lost three of five since the All-Star break. "For 3 1/2 quarters, we did a great job," Wesley said. "Obviously, we have to find a way to play better the last half-quarter. It is ridiculous (that) we lost this game." The Hornets held a 77-69 lead entering the final period and widened the advantage to 89-77 on a short hook by Augmon with 5:09 to play. Andrew DeClercq, who had a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds, had a pair of inside baskets before faking a "handoff" to McGrady and rolling for a dunk and a foul. His free throw made it 89-84 with 3:36 left, and Pat Garrity added two free throws 18 seconds later. "We've been running that out-of-bounds play," DeClercq said. "I kind of felt both guys jump at Tracy and instead of handing it off, I held onto it. It turned out well." After Lynch missed two free throws, Armstrong's 3-pointer tied it. Wesley and Kemp traded a pair of foul shots before Miller made his layup and McGrady took charge. The Magic shot 43 percent (35-of-82) and were outrebounded, 50-34. But they forced 20 turnovers while committing just nine and made 26-of-33 free throws. "One of the things we said before the game is if they outrebound us, we have to force turnovers and those will be our offensive rebounds," Rivers said. P.J. Brown had 14 points and 12 boards, Robert Traylor added 10 and nine and Lynch 10 and seven for the Hornets, who shot 44 percent (35-of-80). "For the last six minutes, we didn't take care of the ball and kind of let them outhustle us and make plays on both ends of the floor," Brown said. "Then the crowd got into it - and they've got a great crowd here - and the momentum really swung. We didn't do a good job of putting this team away on the road." The Hornets shot 67 percent (12-of-18) in the first quarter while holding McGrady to 1-of-7 shooting. They scored the first 11 points and opened a 32-16 lead. "Doc and JD (assistant Johnny Davis) and all them lit a fire in us," Armstrong said. "They get into our (butts) on the bench. And they had the right to get into our (butts)." McGrady found his rhythm in the second period, scoring nine straight Orlando points before a three-point play by Miller made it 44-39 with 3:17 remaining. New Orleans allowed its lead to slip to two points before settling for a 55-49 halftime advantage. The Magic scored the first seven points of the second half to take the lead, but the Hornets rebuilt the advantage to 69-62 on a dunk by Brown with 3:54 left.
