Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Not even the loss of their coach and late-game heroics by Reggie Miller could prevent the Memphis Grizzlies from recording their first winning streak in six weeks. Pau Gasol collected 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks and Jason Williams added 18 and nine assists as the Grizzlies outlasted the Indiana Pacers in overtime, 108-103. The Grizzlies were ahead by 11 points with 8:25 left in regulation and still held a 98-95 lead and the ball after Ron Mercer missed a jumper with 35 seconds remaining. But Shane Battier missed a shot with 16 seconds left and Gasol missed a tip attempt, giving the Pacers a chance to tie. After a timeout, Miller - the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers - missed a shot from the arc but snuck into the paint to grab his own rebound. He dribbled to the right corner, pump-faked Battier, stepped to his left and swished an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer. "I was thinking the same thing as everybody else, thinking, 'Oh, (shoot)!" Williams said. "I kinda figured he was going to hit it because he hadn't hit one all game." But the young Grizzlies did not wilt in overtime, taking the lead for good, 104-102, on a turnaround hook shot by Gasol with 1:31 left. The Grizzlies led, 106-103, when Artest missed a pair of free throws with 12 seconds to go. Mercer grabbed the rebound but missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left, and Wesley Person iced the game with two free throws four seconds later. Battier added 15 points and seven rebounds and Lorenzen Wright 14 and six for Memphis, which had not won back-to-back games since its first two contests in January. "We're playing against great teams and we're beating them," said Gasol, whose team won for the third time in four games after the All-Star break. "I think we're growing up. We just have to keep stepping forward. ... That's our goal." Mild-mannered Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown was ejected just 3:04 into the contest for picking up two technical fouls after complaining that Gasol had been fouled by the Pacers. Ironically, Indiana was whistled for five technicals in the first quarter of its last game. Brown had not picked up any technical fouls prior to the contest. He became the first Grizzlies coach to be ejected since Brian Hill during the 1998-99 campaign. Jermaine O'Neal contributed 23 points and 15 rebounds, Artest also scored 23 points and Miller added 22 for the Pacers, who fell into a first-place tie with Detroit for the best record in the Eastern Confernce and Central Division. "It's very disappointing," Miller said. "We talk about being the team to beat in the East, but if we play like this we'll be lucky to get out of the first round." The Pacers, who are 0-2 on their four-game road trip, have lost the last two meetings against the Grizzlies after winning the first 12 in the series. Indiana also fell to 6-2 in overtime contests this season and 13-5 in games decided by five points or less. After Brown picked up his two technicals - first by referee Sean Corbin and then by Steve Javie - Memphis quickly fell behind, 15-3. But the Grizzlies rallied behind assistant coach Lionel Hollins, climbing within six points entering the second quarter before closing the half on a 10-2 run to take a 48-45 lead into the break. "We lost our focus and our poise after we got out to that big lead," Miller said. "We started jacking up threes when they went to a zone, and I think we totally played into their hands." "Right now we're not playing smart enought as a team," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We fight, we hustle, we do all those things, but right now people are not playing smart. We've got to get tougher-minded in terms of being more mentally sharp out on the court." The Grizzlies led by 13 points before the Pacers scored the final five of the third quarter, including a spinning, fadeaway 3-pointer by Miller at the buzzer, to climb within 78-72 entering the fourth. Hollins, who went 18-42 as the Grizzlies' interim coach during the 1999-2000 campaign, had not earned a victory since April 19, 2000. "It was an incredible win for us," Hollins said. "After the coach left, I told the guys that it doesn't matter who's coaching you guys, you still have to play the game. They were a little bit wobbly and unstable having someone else's voice in the huddle. Once they got comfortable, they turned it around and got to playing the way that we have been playing since the All-Star break." "It changed (the game when Brown was ejected) and I think a lot of people thought we were going to be in trouble, but I think Lionel Hollins and (assistants) Brendan (Brown) and Tony Barone and those guys did a great job," Williams said.
