Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups supplied some timely offense to complement the Detroit Pistons' stifling defense. Billups hit a jumper and a 3-pointer in the final 98 seconds and the red-hot Pistons used a huge bench effort to fend off the Toronto Raptors, 89-84, for their ninth win in 10 games. After a drought of nearly five minutes from the field for the Pistons, Billups drained a 15-footer from the right side to give his team an 84-80 lead with 1:38 remaining. Alvin Williams continued his fourth-quarter surge with a bucket to get the Raptors within 84-82, but Billups sank a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left for a five-point advantage. "I got a good look at it," Billups said. "I love situations like that. I'm glad my teammates have the confidence to get me the ball in big situations." "That was a big shot for them," Toronto's Morris Peterson said. "I don't really know what happened. I turned and saw Billups open and went and contested the shot and he made it." Billups finished with 18 points and reserves Corliss Williamson and Chucky Atkins supplied 16 and 12, respectively, to pace a lopsided 46-12 bench effort. "All three of those guys (Williamson, Atkins and Jon Barry, who had 10 points) could be starters on other teams," Billups said. "We want them to come in with confidence, and they really did that tonight." Peterson scored 20 points and Vince Carter netted just two of his 16 in the second half for the Raptors, who have dropped two of three following a four-game winning streak. "He (Carter) had a couple of good looks and didn't make it. I thought he got bumped a couple of times and didn't get the call," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. The Pistons were extraordinarily careful with the ball, committing only four turnovers, and hit 17-of-18 free throws while shooting just 37.5 percent (33-of-88) from the field. Detroit took the lead midway through the second quarter and held it until Peterson's three-point play with 7:26 to go in the third gave the Raptors a 48-47 edge. Toronto took a 50-47 lead on another bucket by Peterson, but Detroit surged in front with a 6-0 spurt that culminated in a basket by Ben Wallace with 4:11 left in the period. The Pistons took their biggest lead, 72-61, on a three-point play by Williamson with 9:17 left in the game. Toronto gradually worked closer and pulled within 80-78 on Peterson's basket with three minutes to play, setting the stage for Billups. "Things are going well at the moment," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "Our guys are playing hard and playing together. We have a tough stretch ahead, so I want to keep myself grounded." Cliff Robinson scored 13 points and Wallace collected eight, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Pistons, who were beaten off the glass by a 48-38 margin. Detroit improved the best road mark in the Eastern Conference to 17-11 while opening a one-half game lead over second-place Indiana in the Central Division. Jerome Williams grabbed 17 rebounds, Antonio Davis totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds and Alvin Williams scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Raptors, who shot 44 percent (35-of-80) from the floor. A jumper by Carter with 2:57 to go in the first quarter gave Toronto its biggest advantage at 21-10.
