Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones made his return, while Malik Allen compensated for the absence of Caron Butler. Jones scored 23 points and Allen added 22 as the Miami Heat had a rare outburst of offense in a 100-90 victory over the Chicago Bulls that snapped a three-game losing streak. Jones, Miami's leading scorer at 18.5 points per game, had missed the last four games with a groin injury. Without him, the Heat struggled, averaging less than 78 points per game during their slide. The 6-6 guard started and provided a spark, making 6-of-14 shots and 8-of-9 free throws. He was one of three Heat players to eclipse 20 points. "I thought Eddie came back strong in the second half," Heat coach Pat Riley said. Another was Allen, who made 10-of-21 shots and grabbed nine rebounds. He picked up the slack for Butler, the NBA's top-scoring rookie at 14.1 points per game who was hospitalized with flu-like symptoms. "Tonight I was just excited to play," Allen said. "I was really up. This is the way I want to attack the last 27 games." "Sometimes I think the coaches think Malik is better than Malik thinks he is," Riley said. "He's got to realize that it's all there for him. He's got all of the tools and resources." Allen has picked on the Bulls this season. In a double-overtime win on January 18, he scored a season-high 23 points. Travis Best scored 21 points for the Heat, who reached triple figures for just the sixth time this season, improving to 5-1 in those games. "I think over the last five games or so I've been trying to be more aggressive by going to the hole," Best said. "I'm trying to just get back to my old self, which is attacking the hoop and trying to make plays for my teammates." Jalen Rose scored 31 points and Eddy Curry added 26 for the Bulls, who have lost seven straight visits to Miami. They fell to a league-worst 3-29 on the road. "The thing about the NBA is that you have to be prepared to compete in 82 games, and right now we need 12 guys to do that," Rose said. "We might get guys to play good for a quarter and half, but eventually that catches up with you." Chicago has lost three straight games. During that slide, it has been outscored 93-42 in the third quarter. Miami enjoyed a 24-11 edge in this one, taking control of the game. "Obviously, the third quarter really hurt us," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "It was very similar to last night's game." Jones nearly matched the Bulls, scoring 10 in the period. His 3-pointer gave the Heat the lead for good at 50-47 with 8:01 to go. A basket by rookie Rasual Butler built the advantage to 63-53 with 2:38 left. Brian Grant's hoop gave Miami its largest lead at 87-70 with 6:14 to play before Chicago scored 13 of the next 15 points, cutting the deficit to 89-83 on a basket by Rose with 3:41 left. But the Heat responded with seven straight points, including six by Allen, to seal the win. "He made big shots for us in the fourth quarter when we needed them," Riley said. Grant had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, which shot 42 percent (36-of-86), made 23-of-26 free throws and committed just six turnovers. Tyson Chandler had nine points and 12 boards for Chicago, which shot 44 percent (33-of-75) but made just 23-of-39 free throws and committed 12 turnovers. Curry and Chandler missed five foul shots each and Rose committed five turnovers before fouling out. "The 16 missed free throws was absolutely crippling," Cartwright said. "It's tough. But in order to be successful, we need everybody to be playing well on the same night."
