Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jason Terry became the latest player to experience what it's like to play in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers. Terry scored six of his 14 points in the final five minutes and sank a clutch 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining as the Atlanta Hawks posted an 89-87 victory over the Clippers. Of Los Angeles' 35 losses this season, 18 have come when it had a lead at some point in the final period. In this one, the Clippers held an 82-81 edge with 4:31 remaining. But they lost the lead when Terry and Glenn Robinson hit consecutive jumpers, giving the Hawks an 85-82 advantage with 3:04 to play. Los Angeles forged an 85-85 tie on Quentin Richardson's 3-pointer 21 seconds later. On Atlanta's next trip, Terry came off a screen and launched a long 3-pointer from the left side that made it 88-85. After his only 3-pointer of the game, Terry could have given the Hawks a six-point cushion, but with coach Terry Stotts screaming for a timeout, he obliged. "I definitely wanted to take another three," Terry said. "But I put the safety on my gun and went around and called the timeout. It was the smart play because we already had the lead." "We knew were down," Atlanta forward Glenn Robinson added. "Coach talked about it in timeouts. We kept fighting hard and we got back into the game. It feels good to win a close game. That's when we're at our best." The Hawks could not pad their lead, but the Clippers couldn't rally, going scoreless for the final 97 seconds after Lamar Odom's layup. On Atlanta's next possession, Theo Ratliff was called for an offensive foul on Quentin Richardson. But Ratliff made up for it with a critical block on Richardson's driving layup. Trailing 89-87, Los Angeles had a pair of opportunities in the final 10 seconds. But Lamar Odom, who scored its last basket, missed a layup and Elton Brand was smothered by multiple defenders as he tried put home the rebound for the tying hoop. Odom thought he was fouled and screamed at the officials after the game ended. The Clippers took their first lead of the period when Brand's layup made it 78-76 with 7:02 to play. But they missed four of their next five shots before Cherokee Parks made his lone basket and gave them their final lead. "These are games we ought to win," said Brand. "We've lost so many games in the fourth quarter. (It's) hard to believe and tonight I thought we'd get it after coming back." "It's not like we've had a season where we've gotten blown out game after game," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry added. "We've been in every single game. Night in and night out, we've got to have some kind of consistency." Coming off a poor showing in Tuesday's 105-79 loss in Dallas, the Hawks also began this one poorly. They shot just 25 percent (5-of-20) in the first quarter, but rallied in the second and trailed just 48-44 at halftime. Atlanta, which has played some of its worst basketball in the third quarter this season continued its charge against Los Angeles reserves as the second half started. The Clippers built their lead to six on three occasions but went scoreless for 3:02 after Andre Miller's layup gave them a 57-51 lead at the 7:18 mark. Ratliff, who scored 10 of his 18 points in the third period, forged a 57-57 tie with 6:31 left and Alan Henderson's mid-range jumper gave Atlanta its first lead of the second half 49 seconds later. Ratliff's final basket of the quarter gave the Hawks their largest lead at 70-63 with 1:53 remaining. Atlanta took a 72-67 advantage into the fourth but went scoreless for the first 2:40 as Los Angeles stayed in it.
