Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ron Artest was right - he couldn't shoot. Considered doubtful due to an elbow injury, Artest shot just 3-of-17 from the field as the Indiana Pacers suffered their season-worst fifth straight loss, 83-78 to the Washington Wizards, 83-78. Before the game, Artest said he did not think he could shoot because he was unable to bend his elbow, which he kept in a brace. "I think tonight was one of my worst games," Artest said afterwards. "I just wasn't 100 percent. I'm just going to have to keep fighting through it. There's no time for rest now, especially working towards the home-court advantage for the playoffs." The loss snapped the Pacers' 11-game home winning streak against the Wizards and saddled them with their longest losing streak in three seasons under coach Isiah Thomas. Indiana played without point guard Jamaal Tinsley, who was not with the team due to personal reasons. "Tonight is a night where we really missed him," Thomas said. "We missed his floor generalship. We struggled and couldn't get shots we normally get." Michael Jordan had no shooting problems in what likely was his last game against the Pacers. He made 11-of-25 shots and scored 25 points to lead Washington, which also got 18 points and 11 assists from Tyronn Lue. "I just tried to get us into our offense and we were fortunate that we kept hitting shots, especially in the first half," Lue said. "I thought we ran our offense well." Jordan and Lue saved the Wizards on a night when leading scorer Jerry Stackhouse shot 3-of-14 from the field. But Stackhouse made four key free throws in the final minute to help seal the victory. Reggie Miller led the Pacers with 25 points, including a 3-pointer with 2:50 left that gave them a 74-73 advantage. But Christian Laettner hit a jumper at the other end to regain the lead for the Wizards, who never surrendered it. Laettner had 12 points as all five of Washington's starters scored in double figures. Stackhouse also had 12 while Brendan Haywood added 10 and 10 rebounds. Indiana made just one field goal after Miller's 3-pointer, a driving layup by Brad Miller with 33 seconds left that got the Pacers within 79-76. "I think they've lost their continuity in their offense," Jordan said. "Everybody goes through it and it's tough to overcome." Brad Miller had 10 points and 11 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season. Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal totaled 16 points and 15 boards for his 30th double-double. Washington overcame 40.5 percent (32-of-79) shooting by keeping the Pacers under 38 percent (29-of-77). Indiana made just 5-of-22 3-pointers.
