Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Even Jim Cleamons could coach the Los Angeles Lakers to a win over their crosstown rivals. Shaquille O'Neal scored 33 points, but Kobe Bryant had his streak of 40-point efforts stopped as the Lakers extended their winning streak to five games with a 109-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Lakers played without Phil Jackson, who was on the sidelines for the first time in four seasons as the 13-year coaching veteran missed the first game of his career after having a kidney stone removed. His absence did not seem to faze the Lakers, who won for the 21st time in the last 23 meetings with the Clippers. "A head coach knows his team better than anyone," Cleamons said. "He has a feel of what they can do, how they are progressing. Sure we're there every day but the fact remains that he is the teacher and it's his team." Bryant settled for 32 points, failing to reach 40 for the first time in 10 games and failing to reach 35 for the first time in 14 contests. He made just 11-of-26 shots from the floor, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range. "(The streak) started to take the focus away from how well we are playing as a team," he said. "The streak is a streak. It is not going to win us any championships. The most important game obviously is to play the game the right way." "We did a good job, probably as good of a job as you could do on Kobe," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We had some defensive breakdowns but we were right there. He is a great player and did a great job playing within the team." O'Neal had less trouble scoring, making 13-of-21 shots and 7-of-9 free throws. "The fellas were looking for me," he said. "They were spending so much time doubling and tripling Kobe that it gave me an opportunity to have some one-on-one chances." "Shaq got 33 points and is impossible to guard," Gentry said. "He is the most dominant player in the league so it is not a surprise that it makes it difficult for anyone to guard him. The Tamp Bay Buccaneers would have a hard time guarding Shaq if they played him." The Lakers had the lead for the final 16 minutes but were clinging to a 94-89 edge with 4:38 left. Bryant, who scored 20 points in the second half, buried a jumper and O'Neal followed with a thunderous dunk at the 3:41 mark. Bryant added a fast-break dunk and buried two free throws with 2:46 remaining to give the Lakers their largest lead, 102-89. Rick Fox had 12 points and eight rebounds and Robert Horry collected eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who scored 27 points off 16 offensive rebounds and scored 46 points in the paint. Corey Maggette scored 22 points and Elton Brand added 21 as the Clippers lost for the 11th time in the last 14 games. Lamar Odom had 15 points and Andre Miller and Eric Piatkowksi chipped in 10 apiece for Los Angeles, which shot 50 percent 37-of-74) from the floor but was 4-of-15 from 3-point range and just 20-of-29 from the line. "In the fourth quarter we missed a couple chippys," Odom said. "We definitely didn't do the simple things that help you win the game and that's why we lost." O'Neal scored 13 points in the first quarter as the Lakers jumped to a 26-21 lead. Devean George opened the second quarter with consecutive baskets to give the Lakers a nine-point advantage. Brand scored eight points during a 16-7 and forged a 37-37 tie on a dunk with 5:41 remaining. The teams exchanged the lead eight times in the final five minutes and the Clippers had a 51-50 halftime lead after Cherokee Parks buried a jumper at the buzzer. There were five lead changes and three ties in the third quarter before O'Neal gave the Lakers the lead for good at 68-66 on a jumper with 4:05 left. The Lakers had a 78-72 lead entering the fourth after Bryant capped the third with a tip shot in the final second.
