Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Rookie Juan Dixon made the most of his first NBA start, scoring a season-high 27 points to lead the Washington Wizards to a 101-93 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Dixon made 6-of-7 shots and scored 16 points in the third quarter as the Wizards outscored the Bulls, 38-18, to take a 77-64 lead. He also helped get Chicago forward Donyell Marshall ejected after Marshall shoved him and drew his second technical foul with 2:54 left in the period. "I feel great," Dixon said. "This was the opportunity that I was looking for. I'm just going to go out there and do my job and I am going to play hard at both ends of the court." Dixon also made 4-of-8 3-pointers and posted season highs with six rebounds in 44 minutes. He had two assists and a pair of turnovers. "He was ready for the challenge," Wizards forward Christian Laettner said. "He just wanted to do well with his first start." Starting in place of injured guards Larry Hughes and Tyronn Lue, Dixon overshadowed Michael Jordan's final appearance against his former team. Jordan had a solid night with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. "We have been playing well the last four games," Jordan said. "This is a team that you kind of take for granted because they haven't had a successful season. And the next thing you know, they are playing their level of basketball. We were able to elevate our game a little bit." Desptie his all-around performance, Jordan ended a streak of five straight games with at least 20 points. Jerry Stackhouse also had 27 points, including nine in the big third quarter, for the Wizards. He did much of his damage at the free-throw line, where he shot 14-of-16. Washington recorded its third straight win to move back to .500 and a one-half game ahead of Orlando into seventh place in the Eastern Conference. "We (had) to get this one," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "These are the games that you need to win, especially with what we have ahead of ourselves." Marshall's two technicals were less than half the total for the Bulls, who had trouble keeping their cool. Tyson Chandler picked up his second technical in the fourth quarter and was ejected after slapping Wizards center Brendan Haywood. Jalen Rose argued a call 15 seconds after Marshall's ejection and drew a technical. "There's a little bit of a line and we had two guys in the locker room who we really kind of needed at the end of the game," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "I don't mind aggressive play, I kind of like it. But you do have to learn that if you have a `T,' maybe you're not as aggressive after that's happened." Marshall had six points and seven rebounds when he was ejected, while Chandler exited with two points and two boards. "It was like David playing Goliath," Rose said. "And Goliath was able to use the weapons." Rose was particularly upset about a hard foul he received from Jordan that he thought should have been deemed flagrant. Rose chipped a tooth on the play. "Cut out the trash talk and let's just play solid basketball," Jordan said. "He was advocating for all the trash talking and trying to dirty up the game. They didn't have any other purpose other than to try to dirty up the game and get our heads out of the game. He was an advocate for that and I felt that was inappropriate, especially when you've got young guys who you're trying to teach them the right ways, and he's the leader of the ballclub. "Did I foul him hard? Yes, I did. I just felt like he was more or less advocating the whole style of the game that I didn't think was appropriate. He was trying to take the game somewhere else other than playing the game of basketball." Rose and Jamal Crawford led the Bulls with 21 points apiece. Rose was scoreless in the third quarter and had just nine points after halftime. Crawford's total was a career high. Rose shot 1-of-7 from 3-point range as part of a Chicago attack that hit 31 percent (5-of-16) from long distance. He also committed six turnovers. The Bulls have dropped three straight on the road, where they are a dismal 3-30 this season. Laettner added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who also got a season-high five blocks from Haywood.
