Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce showed no ill effects from the back injury that kept him out two games. Pierce scored 31 points and hauled in 13 rebounds and rookie J.R. Bremer poured in a season-high 23 points as the Boston Celtics slipped past the Memphis Grizzlies, 111-110. Pierce, who strained his lower back slipping on ice last week, shot 12-of-19 from the field, including a 3-pointer with 2:08 to play that gave the Celtics' a 107-103 lead. "It's not 100 percent, but most of the pain is pretty much gone," Pierce said. "I felt good out there tonight. It's that time of year, we're coming down to the last 21 games. We realize it's an important stretch for us." Bremer was 5-of-6 from 3-point range to pace Boston's 12-of-22 performance from beyond the arc. "Every game I'm gaining more confidence, I'm playing better now because my teammates have confidence in me too," Bremer said. Antoine Walker finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. His bucket with 5:01 remaining gave the Celtics the lead for good, 99-98. Pau Gasol had 23 points and 17 rebounds and Shane Battier contributed a season-high 21 points for the Grizzlies. Memphis rookie forward Mike Batiste recorded 10 points and six assists in his second start of the season. Grizzlies center Lorenzen Wright missed his second straight game since his daughter, 11-month-old Sierra, died on Saturday. "I was a little nervous, Lorenzen has some big shoes to fill," Batiste said. "I go out there and try my best, and I think my teammates did, too." The Celtics 3-point accuracy was somewhat neutralized by their futility at the foul line, where they were just 13-of-24. In the early going, especially, both teams shot well. The Celtics held a 67-62 halftime lead, but the Grizzlies erased the deficit and took their first lead of the third quarter at 81-79 on Stromile Swift's jumper with 4:31 left. The Celtics nosed in front, but neither team was able to go ahead by more than three points until Bremer's 3-pointer gave Boston a 104-100 edge with 3:02 to go. After Wesley Person and Pierce exchanged 3-pointers, Boston's Tony Battie hit 1-of-2 from the line and Jason Williams countered with a jumper to cut Memphis' deficit to 108-105. Battie sank another free throw, followed by Gasol's jumper, and Bremer hit two from the line before Battier's 3-pointer beat the the buzzer. "Down the stretch, their guys hit some big shots... Bremer, Paul Pierce, obviously, and Walker hit a few," Battier said. "They're a good team, but at the end we thought we could win." Eric Williams scored 12 points and reserve Tony Delk 10 as the Celtic shot 53 percent (43-of-81) from the field. Person had 18 points, Jason Williams 12 and Swift 11 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 48 percent (46-of-95) and held a 48-44 rebounding advantage.
