Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Pau Gasol scored 27 points as the Memphis Grizzlies had an easy time picking up their first road victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, cruising to a 115-89 triumph. The Grizzlies won for the first time in seven trips to Gund Arena and sent the Cavaliers to their sixth straight loss. Gasol shot 11-of-13 from the field and grabbed six rebounds to help Memphis snap a four-game road losing streak and win back-to-back contests for the first time in nearly a month. "I think they kind of quit the second half," Gasol said. "They got down on themselves. It was kind of surprising." Mike Miller netted 13 of his 21 points in the second quarter as the Grizzlies took a 61-55 halftime lead. Miller and Gasol each had 17 at intermission, but neither scored in the fourth quarter as Memphis cruised. "We kept pushing it. We kept running," Miller said. "We knew they didn't get back very well. We kept running on them and putting pressure and we did a pretty good job on the fast break." Memphis scored 29 points on the fast break to seven for Cleveland. The Grizzlies also took advantage of 26 turnovers. Stromile Swift added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which also got 10 assists from Jason Williams. Both teams shot over 57 percent from the field in the first half, but while the Cavaliers cooled off, the Grizzlies stayed hot. They clicked at 52 percent (13-of-25) in the third quarter to Cleveland's 36 percent (5-of-14). "This is a game we feel is a guaranteed win," said Cleveland forward Darius Miles, who scored eight points. "It is embarrassing. The crowd booed us and I don't blame them for that." Memphis finished at 57 percent (47-of-82). Ricky Davis, who wore his hair in a bun at the back of his head in the first half before revealing an enormous afro, led the Cavaliers with 18 points. Davis' 6-of-12 shooting could hardly qualify as a bright spot for the Cavs, who scored 34 points in the second half and completely unraveled. "This was very embarrassing, as embarrassing as you can get," Cleveland coach Keith Smart said. "Early on, we had a decent game and then it got away from us. How we came out in the third quarter just killed us. I understand that we're young, but you have to have personal pride to go out and play." The Cavs led by as many as nine points early and had a 30-28 advantage after the first quarter. "We've got different individuals doing different things," said Cleveland forward Chris Mihm, who was scoreless in 17 minutes off the bench. "We're not playing as a team, offensively or defensively. When the game is going well, it is because we are running our offense. The minute we get a lead, to me it looks like we then get down and everyone starts freelancing out there. That is when things start getting away from us." The Cavaliers fell two games behind Denver for the worst record in the NBA.
