Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies are on the verge of the unthinkable - an unbeaten road trip. Pau Gasol tied a season high with 32 points and Stromile Swift added 23 and 13 rebounds as the Grizzlies secured their first road winning streak in more than a year with a 119-106 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Memphis snapped a four-game road losing streak in Cleveland on Saturday, improving their woeful road record to 5-25. The Grizzlies turned in a dominant offensive effort at the Air Canada Centre to win consecutive road games for the first time since January 10-12, 2002. Memphis, which completes a three-game road trip in New York on Tuesday, shot 57 percent (52-of-92) from the floor and eclipsed 100 points for the 10th time in 13 games. "We didn't have answer for them tonight," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They made some big shots and we just weren't up on people. We were on our heels a little bit and were a step behind." Gasol and Swift combined to make 24-of-34 shots and Jason Williams collected 17 points and 12 assists for the Grizzlies, who have won three straight games for the first time since a season-high four-game winning streak in December. "We got a monster game from Swift and Gasol," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "Our inside play from the two big guys was outstanding." "We are coming together as a team and playing together as a team," said Swift, who recorded his third straight double-double. "We are executing and doing things now we weren't doing at the beginning of the season." The Grizzlies were clinging to an 86-84 lead early in the fourth quarter but broke it open with a 17-5 run. Shane Battier scored five of his nine points during the burst and Gasol capped it with consecutive baskets to give Memphis its largest lead at 103-89 with 5:48 to go. Williams buried a 3-pointer and a jumper in the final 3 1/2 minutes as the Grizzlies held on for their eighth win in 14 games since the All-Star break. "Since the All-Star break, we're 8-6," Brown said. "We really like our chemistry, our cameraderie and I'm happy for them because you can see it. They feel good about themselves." Vince Carter scored 26 points and Morris Peterson added 20 as Toronto lost to Memphis at home for the first time since January 9, 2000. Both Toronto and Memphis played Saturday, but the Raptors fell to 0-11 in the second half of back-to-back games this season. "You really couldn't tell that they played yesterday and you can tell that we did," Peterson said. "Guys were a little tired, I thought we really didn't give the effort that we normally do." Toronto opened the second quarter with six straight points to take a 31-30 lead, but Swift responded with a basket to give Memphis the lead for good and spark a 15-5 run. Swift scored six points during the stretch and Wesley Person finished with back-to-back baskets for a 45-36 lead. The Grizzlies had a 55-48 halftime advantage and led by as many as 13 in the third quarter. The Raptors closed the third with a 16-7 run to pull within 84-80 entering the final period.
