Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Mike James sank two free throws with four-tenths of a second remaining to lift the Miami Heat to a 77-75 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the battle of the Eastern Conference's worst teams. With 1.4 seconds left and the game tied, 75-75, the Heat inbounded to James, who faked Ricky Davis into the air from just inside the arc on the right side and drew the foul. A 75 percent free throw shooter who had missed two foul shots 26 seconds earlier, James hit both to put an end to the Heat's four-game losing streak. "I just knew if I came off and got my feet set and I gave him a good pump fake, I felt I could get him in the air," James said. "At the end we were very fortunate," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We hung in there for 48 minutes and had some opportunities. We had a horrible second half handling the ball and it was good for Mike after he missed two free throws to be able to make it." Travis Best scored 16 points and James finished with 10 for the Heat, who took two of three from the Cavaliers this season. Davis scored 19 points on 6-of-22 shooting and rookie Carlos Boozer netted 15 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost seven in a row. "You can lose a game by 33 points but these are the types of games that really stick in your head," said Cleveland coach Keith Smart, whose team lost despite holding Miami to 10 fourth-quarter points. "You can't fault the effort because the guys did what we wanted them to do." Vladimir Stepania collected 13 points and 11 rebounds and rookie Caron Butler netted 13 points for the Heat, who shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the field. The Heat led, 67-61, after three quarters, but the Cavs were able to claw back and take a 71-70 edge on Boozer's bucket with 5:16 left. After Zydrunas Ilgauskas' 16-footer with 72 seconds left gave the Cavaliers a 75-73 advantage, Best sank two free throws to forge the tie, setting up James' heroics. Darius Miles scored 13 points in just 19 minutes and Ilgauskas added 12 for the Cavs, who shot 32.5 percent (27-of-83) from the floor and held a 46-42 rebounding advantage. Miles was ejected with 7:15 to go in the third for arguing with an official. "I was rolling in the game and I just cost my team a loss," Miles said. "You can blame this one on me."
