Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- For one night at least, the Boston Celtics 
took coach Jim O'Brien's challenge to heart.

Antoine Walker scored 23 points and Paul Pierce added 21 as the
Celtics rebounded from a disappointing effort and cooled off the
New Orleans Hornets with a 93-65 drubbing.

The Hornets, who lost for just the second time in 11 games,
matched the lowest point total in franchise history, set in a
65-56 victory over Miami on December 20, 2000.

One day after Sunday's 94-78 loss to San Antonio, O'Brien
challenged his players to end the season strong, telling them
that if they go 14-5, they will reach 50 wins and possibly
finish with the best record in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics responded with a dominating performance from start
to finish. Boston allowed just 15 points in each of the first
two periods to open a 47-30 halftime lead, then turned the
contest into a rout in the third quarter.

"We were disappointed in our effort on Sunday," Walker said. "As
a team, we felt that we let San Antonio escape without giving
100 percent effort. We understood the importance of this game."

"I really want to step up as a leader on this team - start
showing coach it's that time of year to put the best guys on the
floor," Pierce added.

J.R. Bremer made three of his four 3-pointers in the period,
when the Celtics stretched their lead to as many as 30 points.
Mark Blount's jumper made it 69-39 with 2:35 left.

Since February 1, Bremer has made 46 3-pointers, fourth in the
NBA during that span behind Ray Allen, Tracy McGrady and Latrell
Sprewell.

"Coach has been preaching toughness the past couple days and we
really wanted to come out and play hard and play tough," Bremer
said. "It was important to get going early. They're right on our
butts in the Eastern Conference, so we knew it was a big game."

Baron Davis scored 16 points off the bench for the Hornets, who
also had a five-game road winning streak snapped.

"Guys are tired and they need a break," said New Orleans coach
Paul Silas, whose club was coming off an 81-71 win at Indiana on
Tuesday. "We've got to get our legs back, our energy back.
We'll be fine."

The victory enabled the Celtics to win the season series against
the Hornets, three games to one. That means Boston would have a
edge should the teams finish tied in the standings. The Celtics
are fifth overall in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of
the Hornets.

Boston also kicked off a difficult stretch on a strong note.
Over the next week, it has road games against New Jersey,
Detroit and Indiana and a home contest with the Nets.

"I don't like to say it's a statement game, going down to play
New Jersey (on Wednesday), but it gave us a tiebreaker against a
team that we might need a tiebreaker against because a bunch of
teams are fighting for home-court advantage," O'Brien said. "It
was a real consistent basketball game for us. We played well in
all four quarters."

Boston committed only six turnovers and held New Orleans to 32
percent shooting (23-of-72). The Celtics shot 43 percent
(36-of-84), including 10-of-22 from 3-point range. The Hornets
were just 2-of-16 from the arc.

New Orleans also hurt itself by shooting just 55 percent from
the line (17-of-31).

"Boston is a team that didn't play last night," New Orleans
swingman George Lynch said. "They were fresh and ready to play."

"It's funny because at times I felt like we had good looks, but
then again they played outstanding defense," Hornets guard David
Wesley added. "We had like 30 at the half. Shots just weren't
falling."

Bremer was the only other player in double figures for Boston
with 12 points. He finished 4-of-10 from the field, missing all
three shots inside the 3-point line.

Jamal Mashburn was held to 11 points for the Hornets.
