Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose rediscovered his scoring touch and helped the Chicago Bulls exact revenge against the Atlanta Hawks. Rose scored 31 points and Tyson Chandler collected 13, 11 rebounds and five steals as the Bulls coasted to a 103-78 rout of the Hawks for a split of their season series. The Bulls recorded their largest margin of victory this season and made up for the 110-88 blowout against the Hawks in their previous meeting at the United Center on February 28. "We took it personally when they came in here and beat us," Rose said. "Regardless of who we're playing, we feel we're a pretty good home team." Chicago raised its home record to 21-12. Rose, who had been held to fewer than 20 points in each of the last three games, tallied 17 on 6-of-9 shooting in the opening half. The Bulls were trailing by five when rookie Jay Williams nailed a 3-pointer to spark a 20-3 run over the last six minutes of the first half. Rose converted a four-point play in the waning moments as Chicago opened a 51-39 halftime cushion. The 6-8 swingman also added 11 in the third period as the lead grew to 76-57 after 36 minutes. "It took our second group, including Jay Williams, Rick Brunson and Roger Mason, to come in and really play defense," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "Their play in the second quarter ignited us and carried us into the third quarter." Williams and Brunson combined for 13 assists, only two turnovers and three steals. "I was very disappointed in our play, especially in the second quarter," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "Mentally, we just let up. I don't know if we thought it was going to be easy after the first quarter or what. Our turnovers in the second quarter were a joke." Chicago converted 10 Atlanta turnovers into 17 points in the second. Glenn Robinson scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half and Theo Ratliff chipped in 16 and five blocks, but the Hawks were crushed for the second straight contest after reeling off three wins in a row. Robinson recorded 20 straight points for Atlanta from the 10:34 mark in the third to the 10:43 mark in the fourth. That broke a United Center record established by Charlotte's David Wesley on April 1, 1997, when he reeled off 18 in a row. "Turnovers and loose balls, it seems that's all we did tonight," Robinson said. "That just killed our momentum. They then converted each one of them." In Atlanta's win over Chicago last month, Jason Terry recorded his first career triple-double to lead the Hawks. But on Tuesday, the point guard was held to four points on 2-of-10 shooting with seven assists and five turnovers before limping to the locker room midway through the fourth with an undisclosed injury.
