Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Big shots from Jamal Mashburn and Baron Davis offset another big game from Allan Houston. Mashburn scored 25 points, Davis added 23 and both sank clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the New Orleans Hornets held off the New York Knicks, 101-96, and moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Hornets took the lead for good early in the second quarter but were clinging to an 84-83 edge when Davis buried a 3-pointer from the left side with 5:43 remaining. "It was just a rhythm shot," Davis said. "I was going to the hole. Then I squared my body up. I knew it was going in. It was a three we needed, because we were up by just one at the time. It gave us some control." "His 3-point shot in the fourth quarter when we cut the lead to one was a major shot in the game," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "We were never able to get the lead back." A jumper by Clarence Weatherspoon kept the deficit at 91-87 with 3:40 to play. On the next possession, the Knicks tried to trap Kenny Anderson, who found Mashburn for a 3-pointer and a 94-87 bulge. "Early in the game, they were rotating Allan Houston toward me," Mashburn said. "We sent Baron to the corner on the opposite end, so it was a tough rotation for Houston. Kurt Thomas had to rotate out on me, and he was a little bit late." Houston, who had scored 86 points on 27-of-47 shooting in leading the Knicks to consecutive wins, responded with a jumper at the 2:30 mark. He finished with 29 points on 13-of-27 shooting. But on the next possession, Mashburn sank a difficult fadeaway jumper for a 96-89 lead with 2:05 left, and it was at least a two-possession game thereafter. "I looked at the shot clock on the opposite end, and it was down to four or five seconds," Mashburn said. "I just had to get one up." Jamaal Magloire scored 17 points for the Hornets (39-30), who sneaked past Boston into fifth in the East with their 11th win in 14 games. Slumping Latrell Sprewell managed just eight points for the Knicks (30-38), who fell three games behind Milwaukee in the race for the East's final playoff berth. In his last five games, Sprewell is averaging just 12 points on 19-of-66 shooting. "I'm concerned over his lack of scoring, but I think that the way Houston has played lately, we've been force-feeding him," Chaney said. "We may have to run more plays for Sprewell." With 1:33 left in the third quarter, the game was stopped for 15 minutes while President Bush addressed the nation on the military action in Iraq. The players were given several minutes to loosen up after returning to the court. "It's tough getting called off the court and not knowing what to expect or how long it's going to last. You don't know when you're going back on the court," Mashburn said. "When we came back out, we were a little bit out of sync. But this is the real world. This is about war, and everything else is pretty much secondary." Mashburn made 8-of-20 shots and collected eight rebounds and eight assists. He picked up the slack for the injured David Wesley, who sat out with a bruised left foot. Houston was limited to four points in the fourth quarter, including a meaningless jumper just before the horn. George Lynch, Courtney Alexander and Mashburn took turns trying to guard him. "I tried to take him out of his comfort zone," Lynch said. "He likes to go to his left and get his jumper off. I tried to be physical with him. You have to make him work for every shot. The more you make him work, the more you can wear him down in the fourth quarter, and he isn't able to get his team what they need." "We did a decent job on the perimeter guarding Houston," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "But the key to the game was rebounding. That really hurt them. We used our size against them." New Orleans held a 45-33 advantage on the boards, 18-10 on the offensive end. Brown and Magloire swept eight boards each and reserves Jerome Moiso and Robert Traylor combined for eight. The Knicks were within 80-79 early in the final period, but Moiso dunked off a nice feed from Mashburn and Traylor added a follow dunk to push the lead to five points with 7:07 to go. Moiso also had a tip-in that made it 91-85 with 3:55 left. "(Moiso) is coming along," Silas said. "We are giving him a little more time. He's just producing right now. He's really focused." Brown scored 10 points for the Hornets, who shot 45 percent (38-of-85) and scored 42 points in the paint. Thomas scored 12 points for the Knicks, who shot 47 percent (38-of-81) but had just 24 points in the paint. Eisley scored 11 points in the first quarter, which ended in a 30-30 tie. A jumper by Magloire opened the second period and gave the Hornets the lead for good. New Orleans held a 72-63 lead with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter and an eight-point bulge when the game was stopped two minutes later. New York closed to 78-74 entering the final period.
