Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With Kobe Bryant beset by foul trouble, Shaquille O'Neal had no problem carrying the Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal overmatched the undersized Boston Celtics in the paint, producing season highs with 48 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Lakers to a 104-96 victory. "Bill Russell was probably one of the greatest centers to play the game. He was there watching, so I wanted to put on a show," O'Neal said of the Celtics' great. "Too much O'Neal," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We did not have an answer for him. We scored well in a tough game, but we just couldn't stop the big fella." With Bryant on the bench for much of the first half, Boston led by as many as 13 points and took a 52-41 advantage into the break. But O'Neal scored 14 points in the third quarter as Los Angeles rallied for a 75-69 edge heading into the final period. The Lakers took the lead for good, 64-63, on a 3-pointer by Rick Fox with 5:14 left in the third period. The Lakers stretched the advantage to 92-79 on a dunk and free throw by O'Neal with 5:56 left. Boston got within 99-94 on a jumper by Walter McCarty with 61 seconds to play, but O'Neal responded by grabbing the rebound of a missed layup by Fox, dunking and making a free throw. "He is definitely in a position to play now, night in and night out," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "When I turned over and told him to tell me when he was ready in the fourth quarter, he said he was born ready." After throwing down the dunk, O'Neal - who connected on 19-of-24 shots - flexed his right biceps at a TV camera under the basket - to the delight of the Staples Center crowd. "Boston was fronting me and I always considered myself unfrontable," O'Neal said. "I should have had 60. I missed some free throws and a couple of chippies." "When a guy as talented as Shaq is in the rhythm that he is in, there's not a whole lot the defense can do," Lakers forward Mark Madsen said. "They had three or four guys surrounding him at times, and Shaq with his strength and skill was just going right through them." Bryant finished with 13 points - eight in the fourth quarter - and Fox had 11 for the Lakers, who won their ninth straight home game. It was their only contest at the Staples Center in a 10-game stretch. "It was a good day off," Bryant said. "I don't need them, but they are always good. Rest never hurts." Antoine Walker scored 25 points, rookie J.R. Bremer added 23 and Paul Pierce had 21 for the Celtics, who were outrebounded, 49-31, and outscored in the paint, 50-32. Los Angeles shot 53 percent (41-of-78) while limiting Boston to 43 percent (32-of-74). "A variety of things contributed to their lead," Jackson said. "The second half, we had to just orient our offense a little differently and put a person in that position that can make shots."
