Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Baron Davis had 22 points and nine assists and Jamal Mashburn added 22 points and eight assists as the New Orleans Hornets coasted to a 113-98 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in the opener of a home-and-home series. Davis and Mashburn led six players in double figures as New Orleans moved a game behind fourth-place Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference. Playing his fifth game since returning from left knee surgery, Davis made a driving layup to ignite the Hornets' 33-13 surge over the final 9:38 of the second quarter. "I thought we could accomplish a lot of things if we pushed the ball at them," Davis said. "They're known for giving up lots of points, so that's what we wanted to do." Michael Redd scored 24 points off the bench for the Bucks, who slipped into a virtual tie with idle Washington for the final playoff berth in the East. "It just reminds you of the playoffs on a back-to-back like that," Redd said. "You just have to look forward to tomorrow. We have to know that we're going to be on our home court tomorrow night. So we should be in the driver's seat, like they were tonight." Despite playing without injured guard David Wesley for a second straight game, the Hornets scored a season-high 70 points in the first half. They totaled a season-best 38 in the second quarter, when they outshot the Bucks, 65 percent to 35 percent. "We just did a good job executing on the offensive end," New Orleans forward P.J. Brown said. "They tried to put the zone in. The last time we played those guys, they had a lot of success with the zone. This evening, we just picked them apart." New Orleans had a six-point lead when Davis collected four points, an assist and a steal to spark a 10-2 burst over a two-minute span. His dunk with 7:36 left in the half capped the surge and gave the Hornets a 47-33 lead. "The zone didn't work, our offense didn't help," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We turned the ball over and gave them a lot of easy baskets in transition. And the hole was just too big to fight back." The Bucks pulled within 11 points before Jamaal Magloire hit a hook shot with 5:10 to go, making it 50-37. Mashburn converted four straight from the line before feeding George Lynch for a layup as the Hornets opened a 56-37 cushion. Magloire also converted a three-point play with 2:45 left to increase the advantage to 22 points. The 6-11 center finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his 18th double-double of the season. Brown also chipped in 14 points. The 10-year veteran nailed consecutive 15-footers as the Hornets' lead grew to 65-42. After Redd made a layup for Milwaukee, Davis failed to complete a three-point play but forced All-Star point guard Gary Payton to commit one of his four turnovers. "I thought our defense played really well," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "Mash did a pretty good job on (Sam) Cassell and Baron did the same against Payton. It was good to see us back rebounding again." With Milwaukee power forward Anthony Mason sidelined due to a strained left hip, the Hornets enjoyed a 45-30 rebounding edge. "Our big guys got abused," Karl said. "We had no answer to them, rebounding-wise or defending. ... There was not one big guy on our team that played well against their big guys." Lynch nailed a 3-pointer in the waning seconds, enabling New Orleans to take a 70-44 lead into the locker room.
