Game StoryMIAMI (Ticker) -- Gary Payton and Sam Cassell helped the Milwaukee Bucks hold on to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Payton and Cassell scored 20 points apiece as the Bucks swept their home-and-home series with the Miami Heat with a 91-86 victory. The Bucks cruised to a 109-87 home victory over the Heat on Sunday, when Payton scored 24 points and Cassell added 23. With Monday's win, Milwaukee (36-39) opened a one-game lead over Washington for eighth place in the East. The teams are even in the loss column. "If you win games, you don't have to scoreboard-watch," Payton said. "We're up now. If we win all our games and then look and see that they lost or something, then that's good. But if we win, we put ourselves in a better situation. If we lose, then we have to scoreboard-watch." Cassell tallied 12 points as the Bucks closed the game on a 17-6 run and snapped their four-game road skid. "We're going to get the eighth spot," Cassell said. "We're not fighting for it, we're going to get the eighth spot. That's a guarantee. The eighth spot is ours to lose. We have it right now. It ain't going to be easy, but nothing worth having comes easy." Eddie House scored a season-high 21 points off the bench, but the Heat lost for the ninth time in 11 games. "We just didn't get it done again at the crucial time," House said. "When we needed to make something happen, we didn't make it happen and we took the (loss)." Miami was trailing by nine when Malik Allen nailed a jumper less than two minutes into the fourth to ignite a 16-1 run. House converted a pair of free throws and made a jumper around rookie Rasual Butler's 3-pointer as the Heat grabbed a 78-72 lead with 5:29 to play. "I expected this game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "I knew the Heat would play tough. (Heat coach Pat Riley) had them really prepared. I was happy we got the lead in the fourth quarter and managed to hold on. The Bucks were down by six when Cassell nailed a pair of 3-pointers during a 40-second span to knot the contest, 80-80, with 3:24 left. "We were just a little late on Cassell's two threes," Riley said. "We got sucked into penetration. It wasn't that threatening and we were leaving him open." Acquired from Seattle along with Payton at the trading deadline, Desmond Mason made a jumper with 64 seconds left put Milwaukee ahead for good, 83-82. "We have an opportunity to play basketball at a very high level if we can win games and we know that," Karl said. "We're going to look at the scoreboard and see what's happening, but our schedule's good and we're playing games that if we play the right way and play hard, we have a good chance of winning." Cassell hit a 17-footer, then made four straight from the line to give the Bucks an 89-84 lead with just 14 seconds left. Payton made two from the stripe with 8.1 seconds remaining to open a seven-point cushion. The Heat's second leading scorer, rookie Caron Butler, did not play due to a sprained left knee.
