Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets have gotten a little taste of what it's like to play in the Western Conference. Dirk Nowitzki had 30 points and 11 rebounds and Steve Nash scored 17 points as the Dallas Mavericks rolled to a 95-86 victory over the Hornets. New Orleans is a fighting for playoff position in the Eastern Conference but on Sunday lost to San Antonio, which has the second-best record in the league, and was outplayed by league-leading Dallas. It does not get much easier in the final weeks of the season for the Hornets, who play four of their final seven games against playoff-bound teams from the Eastern Conference. Nowitzki scored 11 points in the third quarter and Nash added six as Dallas held to New Orleans to 17 points and carried a 75-62 cushion into the fourth. "Their zone is like their man-to-man and they are a good offensive team, so they are tough to cover, especially Nowitzki," former Mavericks Jamal Mashburn said. "They are a tough match-up. Regardless of us making shots, they were going to stay in that zone." The Hornets never led in the second half against Mavs, who pulled away with a 14-4 run bridging the final two quarters. Nowitzki and Raef LaFrentz scored five points apiece during the spurt, which gave Dallas an 82-64 cushion with 8:49 remaining. The Mavericks had their largest lead at 91-70 after Nash buried a technical free throw with 4:31 remaining. "All I know is we played well enough to win," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I didn't think it was going to be an easy game. It was like pulling teeth, but I'd look up and we would have leads. I didn't think we were playing all that well, but we will take it." LaFrentz and Eduardo Najera scored 11 points apiece as Dallas played its sixth straight games with starting guard Michael Finley, who is sidelined with a strained left hamstring. "Someone's got to pick up the slack for Mike," Nash said. "The most important thing for those guys is that they were on the boards. Those guys really have a big impact on our team." The Mavericks (56-18) have won five games without Finley and are one win shy of matching the franchise record for victories in a season. Dallas is two games ahead of the Spurs for the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. "At this time of the year you just take the win and go to the next game," Mavs guard Adrian Griffin said. "These games are so important that any way you can get them, you take them." Baron Davis scored 18 points and Jerome Moiso added 12 and a season-high 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who are just one-half game ahead of sixth-place Boston in the East. George Lynch scored a season-high 13 points and Mashburn was held to 10 on 4-of-13 shooting as New Orleans lost for the fourth time in five games. "He was our main priority coming into the game," Nash said of Mashburn. "Everyone was focused and everyone did a good job of giving help and trying to take away his strengths." "I didn't do anything extraordinary except try to make (Mashburn) work for the ball every trip down," said Griffin, who guarded Mashburn most of the game. "You are never going to stop him 1-on-1, but you can eliminate his touches. The whole team did a good job knowing where he was out on the court." The Hornets played their seventh straight game without guard David Wesley, who is out with a bruised foot, and have lost seven straight meetings with the Mavericks.
