Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- John Stockton and Karl Malone hurt two Los Angeles teams on one play. Malone scored on a pick-and-roll pass from Stockton with 17 seconds left to help lift the Jazz to a 94-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. With the win, the Jazz (44-30) moved a game ahead of the Lakers in the race for sixth place in the Western Conference. "Going into the season, everyone said we'd probably be in the lottery," Malone said. "Those same people will eat their words after the kind of season we've had. ... We've been the underdog for 18 years and it's not going to change now." After Stockton split Sean Rooks and Andre Miller with a pass, Malone hit a short jumper to put Utah up, 91-87. A driving layup by Corey Maggette cut the deficit to two points, but Andrei Kirilenko hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory. "That one pass (Stockton) made at the end of the game was about as good of a pass as you'll ever see anyone in the world ever make, to get it through that hole he had to put it through to get it to Karl Malone for an easy jump shot," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "There aren't many guys in the game that I've ever seen that can put it through a hole like that. To me, that's one of the most incredible things about John. As long as he's played, he can still get the ball to where it's supposed to go if guys can get to that spot." The Clippers hurt themselves at the line in the fourth quarter, making only 8-of-14 free throws. Lamar Odom was the only player to successfully convert a pair during the frame. "It's hard when guys who usually shoot 80 percent miss free throws," said Elton Brand, who had 12 points and 13 boards, but missed 2-of-4 at the line. "It kind of hurt us. I thought we had that game." Odom shot just 1-of-12 from the field and scored only four points. Maggette led Los Angeles with 23 points. Malone scored 25 points to lead the Jazz, who have won seven of their last eight games. Stockton put Utah ahead to stay at 87-86 with 54 seconds left when he hit a 15-footer from the right wing. On Los Angeles' next possession, Matt Harpring came up with a steal and went the length of the court for a layup. Stockton had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with 10 assists and three steals. Malone also had a pair of steals. The Jazz shot 58 percent (11-of-19) from the field in the fourth quarter and 49 percent (37-of-76) overall. Utah led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but allowed Los Angeles to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:11 left in the third quarter when Rooks hit a 20-foot jumper to cap an 8-0 run. The Clippers took their last lead at 86-85 with 1:10 left when Andre Miller scored on a backdoor pass from Eric Piatkowski.
