Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics decided two embarrassing losses to the Miami Heat were enough. Paul Pierce scored 28 points in three quarters as the Celtics beat the last-place Heat for the first time in three meetings this season with a 90-62 victory. "That's playoff basketball, the type of intensity we had," Pierce said. "It feels good to come out like that, with that type of intensity, no matter who we're playing against." The Celtics suffered a 91-81 loss to Miami here on December 18, then shot a franchise-low 27.8 percent (22-of-79) from the field in a 90-70 defeat at Miami nine days later. Boston turned the tables in this one, holding the Heat to 35.5 percent (27-of-76). Only a 3-pointer by Mike James with four seconds left Miami enabled to match its season low in points, set in a 93-62 loss at Detroit on February 17. "It was a very good defensive game for us," said Celtics forwrad Antoine Walker, who was held to just 11 points. "We came out very aggressive and we stopped them from doing things offensively that they wanted to do." The Celtics allowed just 28 points in the first half, building an 18-point halftime lead before blowing it open in the third quarter. Miami committed 22 turnovers. "Those kinds of games are just absolutely hard to deal with," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "They were so much better and they were so much more active, quicker and actually just outclassed and outcoached us." Boston has won three in a row following a season-high six-game losing streak, although the two previous victories came in a home-and-home sweep of the league-worst Cleveland Cavaliers. "We could have easily gone into the tank but we able to get a win," Pierce said. "Now, we've put together three a row, looking for four in a row as we continue to try to complete the season on a high note." After scoring 18 points in the first quarter, the Heat managed just 10 in the second period. They were held to 16 in the third and trailed, 73-44, entering the final quarter. "It's embarrassing," Miami center Brian Grant said. "There's no other way to put it. We did not compete at all." "It's beyond embarrassing and it's beyond humiliating," Riley added. "But you have those games." Rookie Caron Butler led Miami with 17 points. The Heat got to the foul line only five times, making four. They also made just 4-of-17 3-pointers, while the Celtics were 10-of-30 from beyond the arc. Tony Delk contributed 10 points off the bench for the Celtics, while rookie J.R. Bremer grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. "Basketball is all about energy, defense and toughness, and I thought we showed that tonight," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "Turning them over 22 times is a very good effort." Vladimir Stepania was the only other player in double figures for Miami with 10 points. The Heat suffered their sixth straight road loss and has dropped 10 of 12 overall. The Celtics never trailed, taking the lead for good at 4-2 on Pierce's dunk with 10:23 left in the first quarter. Pierce's jumper capped an 11-0 spurt that gave Boston a 73-42 with 1:30 left in the third period. The Celtics led by as many as 36 in the final quarter.
