Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks missed a major chance to move closer to a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. Leading by 19 points late in the third quarter, the Bucks collapsed down the stretch and allowed the Chicago Bulls to rally for a 117-115 victory in overtime. Gary Payton missed a layup and Desmond Mason failed on a follow dunk as Milwaukee tried to tie the game at the overtime buzzer. "I'm not in a good mood right now," Payton said. "So I have nothing to say." Milwaukee's loss ended a four-game winning streak and kept the Bucks from reaching .500 for the first time since March 11. "We had an opportunity to have a great week," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Some of the outcome was our fault and some of it was Chicago's pride. We had good control of the game early when we were focused defensively and passing the ball. "It's ironic that we lose the game when Mason misses a dunk on that offensive rebound. Our lack of offensive execution was the key in this loss." The Bucks trailed by four points after Jalen Rose hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left for the last of his 31 points. But Tim Thomas hit a 3-pointer to get Milwaukee within 116-115 with 7.7 seconds remaining. Rookie Jay Williams hit only 1-of-2 free throws at the other end to leave the door open, but Milwaukee could not seal the deal. Chicago won for the first time in eight overtime games. "It feels good to win a game in overtime," Rose said. "But the reality of being a player is that the games come and go so fast you never realize whether the loss is in overtime or just a loss. (Losses) all feel the same." The Bucks (38-40) had their lead over Washington in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference sliced to 2 1/2 games. They need any combination of three wins or Wizards' losses to clinch that position. "I take total responsibility for this loss," Bucks guard Sam Cassell said. "Gary Payton played the game he's supposed to play. Michael Redd played the game he's supposed to play. Desmond, Tim (Thomas), Ervin (Johnson) - they all played well. But I didn't play my game. I didn't bring to the table what I was supposed to bring to the table, so I'm taking total responsibility for this loss." Cassell shot 8-of-27 from the floor and 1-of-6 from 3-point range for 21 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. He was 2-of-5 from the field in overtime, 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. "Eight-of-27, that's not respectable," Cassell said. "The way I'm shooting the ball, that just can't happen. We all didn't have a good shooting night, but me particularly. I gotta make shots. Missing that many shots is ridiculous." As a team, Milwaukee shot 41 percent (44-of-108) from the field and 40 percent (8-of-20) from 3-point range. Rose scored seven of his points during a 10-0 run as the Bulls got within 98-97 with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter. He gave the Bulls the lead, 103-102, on a layup with 1:56 left. Williams added two more points with 58 seconds left, but Redd sent the game to overtime on a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go. "It was a battle," Redd said. "The lesson of this is that we can't stop playing hard." Milwaukee took a 108-105 lead at the start of overtime on a 3-pointer by Cassell, but the Bulls scored the next seven points and never trailed again. The Bucks have lost four straight games in Chicago. Williams, Donyell Marshall and Jamal Crawford each had 19 points for the Bulls. Crawford matched up against Payton, his boyhood idol. "I've been playing against him so long, I won't back down on him," Crawford said. "He'll lose respect for me." The Bulls shot 51 percent (45-of-88) from the field.
