Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Caron Butler tied Sherman Douglas' team record for points by a rookie as the Miami Heat snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with an 89-83 victory over the depleted Toronto Raptors. Butler finished with 12 points. He matched Douglas' record of 1,155 points set in the 1989-90 season by hitting a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left. "That's means a lot to me, to be one of the best rookies to ever play for this franchise," Butler said. "So, obviously I'm going to get it (the rookie record) now. It's going to be fun." "We're just going to shut him down for the rest of the season," joked Miami coach Pat Riley. "We don't want his head to get any bigger." Butler good-naturedly jabbed back at his coach, insisting his head cannot get any bigger. "This is as big as it is going to get," he said. "I was born with this head. I came out headfirst." Anthony Carter's wide-open jumper from the foul line snapped an 83-83 tie and gave the Heat the lead for good with 33 second left. "When the line is that wide open, you know someone did something wrong," Carter said. "I thought Fonz (LaPhonso Ellis) and Briant Grant did a goob job of setting the screen." After Toronto's Alvin Williams missed a jumper, Butler's pair from the line provided a four-point lead. Following an airball by Toronto rookie Chris Jefferies, Ellis converted two from the line with nine seconds to go to cap the scoring. Brian Grant scored 16 points for the Heat, who erased a 52-45 halftime deficit. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 31st double-double of the season. "It's refreshing," Grant said. "It's nice to be able to come home and get a win. It's real nice." Williams scored 16 points and Jefferies added 15 for the Raptors, who played without starters Vince Carter (left ankle sprain) and Antonio Davis (groin). After allowing Toronto to shoot 60.5 percent (23-of-38) from the field in the first half, the Heat gave up only 31 points in the second half, including 13 in the fourth quarter. "We worked hard, but we all made mistakes," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I thought we played decent and it just didn't go our way." Toronto opened its biggest lead, 49-39, on Jefferies' driving layup with 2:52 left in the first half. The Raptors were held scoreless after Morris Peterson's 3-pointer tied it, 83-83, with 2:53 remaining. "Everybody was making a run for it in the second half," Toronto forward Jerome Williams said. "I guess it was their defense at the end of the game that secured the victory for them." Toronto finished at just under 43 percent (35-of-82) while holding Miami to 42 percent (33-of-79), but the Heat made 21-of-26 free throws, compared to just 9-of-13 for the Raptors.
