Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Toni Kukoc helped Michael Jordan win three championship rings but is doing his former Chicago Bulls teammate few favors now. Kukoc scored a season high-tying 26 points off the bench as the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Los Angeles Clippers, 112-92, to inch closer to the final Eastern Conference playoff berth - and push Jordan's Washington Wizards out of the picture. "We're part of different teams now," said Kukoc of Jordan, with whom he won three straight NBA titles with Chicago from 1996-98. "Each one of us is trying to do the best we can for our teams to extend our season. (But) he one more time did an unbelievable job with his team." "Toni Kukoc was fantastic," Bucks coach George Karl of his forward, who also added eight assists, seven rebounds and three blocks. (He had) probably one of the best basketball games I've seen him play. He's good at both ends of the court. He did a good job running, passing and blocking shots tonight. He's a big-time player." Milwaukee (39-40) moved within one victory or one loss by Washington of clinching a spot in the postseason. The Wizards (36-42), who lost to Boston, trail the Bucks by 2 1/2 games. Washington has four games remaining and Milwaukee three, with the Bucks holding the tiebreaker. "The team we just played is a very good team," Clippers coach Dennis Johnson said. "I don't know where they stand in the playoffs, but they should be in that fourth spot." The Clippers jumped out to an early 12-3 lead before Kukoc came off the bench to rally the Bucks. Milwaukee took the lead for good, 19-18, on a layup by Desmond Mason with 3:33 left in the opening period and extended its edge to 28-21 after 12 minutes. The Bucks blew open the game in the second quarter, taking a 62-41 advantage into halftime and cruising thereafter. "They saw the game slipping away in the beginning and turned it up," Clippers swingman Corey Maggette said. "They have so many great players - Gary Payton, Sam Cassell, Desmond Mason - who step up and help their team out. They wanted to win." Cassell added 22 points, Payton 21 and Tim Thomas 16 and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 53 percent (44-of-83) from the field and held the Clippers to 44 percent (33-of-75) en route to their fifth win in six games. "We want to go into the playoffs on a postive note," Cassell said. "It's important for us to keep up this momentum right on into the playoffs." Elton Brand contributed 21 points and 11 rebounds and Maggette scored 20 points for Los Angeles, which lost for the eighth time in 10 games. "You have to give them a lot of credit," Brand said. "They came out with a lot of intensity. They looked like a team battling for a playoff spot and we didn't."
