Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn's only basket of the fourth quarter could not have come at a better time for the New Orleans Hornets. Mashburn's jumper with 20.9 seconds remaining gave the Hornets the lead for good in an important 93-89 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Contained by Corliss Williamson for most of the final period, Mashburn took just two shots after scoring 15 through three quarters. But coming out of a timeout he caught the Pistons on a defensive switch and the 6-8 forward went around 6-3 guard Chauncey Billups. As he was fouled, Mashburn's jumper rolled in for a 90-89 edge. "Basically it was just a 3-1 pick-and-roll," Mashburn said. "They switched it and I took him on the block and just made a move to score the opposite way he was defending me. I remember in the first half he kind of threw off the timing of my shot. He was playing behind me, trying to reach from behind." "That's the way we'd been playing him most of the game, switching," Billups said. "They were successful most of the game with that. They beat us at home on a last-second shot with the same play. He hit a tough shot again." The Pistons, who were out of timeouts, had a chance to go ahead, but Williamson's jumper was well short and George Lynch easily grabbed the rebound. Lynch split a pair at the line and Mashburn made two more foul shots to seal it. Mashburn finished with 20 points as New Orleans (44-35) moved within two games of Indiana for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. "We ran a pick-and-roll with me and Mash," New Orleans guard David Wesley said. "They have a choice. They can either double the ball and leave me with a spot-up shot, or they can switch it, which a lot of teams do. You know, Mash kills 6-7 guys, much less somebody 6-2. So they decided to switch it, and Mash put it in the basket." It was the second time this season Mashburn beat Detroit with a clutch shot in the fourth. I n New Orleans' 93-91 triumph at Detroit on February 22, he sank a 16-footer from the right wing with two-tenths of a second remaining. Detroit (48-31) remained tied with New Jersey for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons played their third straight game without leading rebounder Ben Wallace. Wallace, the NBA leader in rebounds and blocks per game and the 2002 Defensive Player of the Year, suffered a sprained left MCL late in Sunday's loss to San Antonio. Williamson scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and was instrumental on both ends of the court during a key spurt that gave Detroit an 83-80 lead with 5:14 left. Williamson's big effort nearly helped the Pistons overcome a huge disparity in rebounds and second-chance points, but instead they lost for the fifth time in six games. New Orleans outrebounded the Pistons, 45-39 and outscored them in the paint 46-34. The Hornets played without their top rebounder P.J. Brown, who missed his third consecutive game with a sprained right knee. But Jamaal Magloire compensated for Brown's absence, pulling down 18 rebounds. "Ben gets most of those rebounds, those second shots they got in the first half," Billups said. "They're not going to get most of those drives when the big fellow is playing. We've got to try and get used to playing without Ben. It has changed the whole complexion of the of the game. We've got to get used to it, at least for a short span here and try to pick up some wins." "With him in there or not, it didn't really matter," Mashburn said. "We were planning on attacking the glass anyway. They're a good defensive team you've got to get second-chance points in order to beat that ballclub there. They play such great help defense that they're going to be vulnerable to offensive rebounds. Magloire's biggest rebound came off Kenny Anderson's miss. Without a Piston in position to grab the rebound, Magloire stormed through the lane and dunked for an 86-85 edge with 1:42 remaining. After holding a 50-46 lead at halftime, Mashburn had six points as the Hornets closed out the third on a 12-4 run and built a 70-63 cushion entering the fourth. But the Pistons chipped away and forged a 73-73 tie on Chucky Atkins' 3-pointer with 8:40 to go. Williamson scored four points before Clifford Robinson and Jon Barry ended the spurt with back-to-back 3-pointers.
