Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups provided the heroics in a season full of them for the Detroit Pistons. Billups scored eight of his 28 points in the second overtime as the Pistons clinched their second straight Central Division title by outlasting the Memphis Grizzlies, 110-107. Detroit (49-31) moved into a tie atop the Eastern Conference standings with New Jersey after just its second win in seven games. The Pistons, who improved to 8-0 in overtime contests, can claim the East's top seed by winning their final two games. "I congratulate our players," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's an accomplishment to win a division title for the second year in a row." Billups again came up big in the clutch as he has on numerous occasions during the season. He owns 10 baskets in the final two minutes of regulation or overtime that have tied the game or given Detroit the lead. Billups gave Detroit the lead for good, 108-107, with a jumper with 45 seconds to go. Corliss Williamson stripped Memphis' Pau Gasol on the next possession and the Pistons recovered the loose ball. "I got a couple of looks in the first overtime, but missed two layups," Billups said. "In that second overtime, I was going to make sure that we stayed aggressive and we got good shots every time." After a pair of fouls by Memphis, Billups sank two free throws with 17 seconds left for a three-point edge. The Grizzlies elected to go immediately for a 3-pointer and Jason Williams misfired with 12 seconds to go. The rebound resulted in a jump ball, and Detroit's Richard Hamilton fell on it and called timeout with just over two seconds left. The Pistons' Michael Curry did not find anyone open on the inbounds and threw it ahead of the pack to avoid a five-second violation. Memphis' Shane Battier came up with the ball and was only able to manage a rushed shot from halfcourt that was well short as time expired. "Both teams hit big shots," Battier said. "We made some big shots to get to double overtime. We just couldn't get the big one to finish." Billups scored Detroit's final eight points and also added 10 rebounds and six assists. The Pistons, who played their fourth straight game without injured leading rebounder Ben Wallace, placed six players in double figures as Hamilton scored 18 and Williamson netted 14. Rookie Mehmet Okur collected 13 points and 12 rebounds to key what has been a typical effort for Detroit's reserves. The Pistons came up with 41 points off their bench. "It's one of the things we've been able to rely on this year," Williamson said. "Our bench is able to come in and score some points and make an impact on the game." Memphis got a layup by Brevin Knight for its largest lead, 76-66, with 11:21 left in regulation. A 3-pointer by Chucky Atkins capped an 11-2 surge that cut the deficit to one point with just under eight minutes to go. Stromile Swift's follow shot gave the Grizzlies a 90-85 lead with 2:25 remaining. But Detroit demonstrated its quick-strike tendency as Billups and Jon Barry drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Pistons their first lead since the opening period. "We had the game won in the fourth quarter," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "Unfortunately, they made four 3-pointers, but we did a great job of defending them." Barry scored 12 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to rally Detroit. He beat Wesley Person upcourt for a layup on the fast break for a 93-92 edge with 35 seconds left, but Gasol tied it with a free throw nine seconds later. "I thought Barry's contributions were certainly key," Carlisle said. "He hit some shots. He got to the rim and defensively he was very solid." The Pistons tried to win it with Billups, who saw his one-handed runner in the lane rim out in the closing seconds. Memphis again appeared to be in good shape for the victory after Battier's basket with 2:05 left in the first overtime opened a 100-97 lead. Williamson patiently drew a double-team and found Okur for a 3-pointer that tied the game with 70 seconds left to play. Detroit had the ball at the end of the first overtime with a chance to win and Clifford Robinson came up short with a jumper. The Pistons' assault on the glass resulted in a 57-42 rebounding advantage. "We did not do a good job on the boards," Battier said. "We did make a lot of good assists and we played some very good team ball tonight." Gasol finished with 24 points and nine rebounds and Battier drilled four 3-pointers and matched a season high with 22 points. Swift scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, but played only 24 minutes before fouling out. "It was very physical," said Gasol, who made 9-of-19 shots. "They are a tough team even without Ben Wallace. They just get after it." The Grizzlies did not get much from its backcourt of Williams and Person, who combined for 14 points on 6-of-17 shooting. Williams had scored 38 points in his last two outings.
