Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Isiah Thomas broke his clipboard in frustration, but the Indiana Pacers didn't get the message. In a game marred by 11 technicals and 57 personal fouls, the playoff-bound Milwaukee Bucks posted a 107-98 victory over the Pacers. The loss was the third straight for the Pacers (46-34), who ruined any chance they had of finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference and now may even lose home-court advantage in the first round. Indiana leads fifth-place New Orleans (44-35) by just 1 1/2 games and can no longer catch New Jersey (49-31), which leads the conference. It also trails Detroit (48-31) and Philadelphia (47-32). New Orleans plays at Philadelphia on Sunday night and Detroit visits Memphis. Thomas picked up one of three technicals called against the Pacers in a span of less than a minute in the third quarter and broke his clipboard in frustration. "It was a combination of the referees letting the game get out of hand and too much talking by the players," Thomas said. "There were a couple of times where I thought all the players were talking, or doing what they do." After scoring a layup to pull the Pacers within 63-62 with 5:59 left in the third quarter, Ron Artest was whistled for delay of game and was handed a technical for taunting. "I like talking trash. I was talking the whole game and Gary (Milwaukee guard Gary Payton) and I talk all the time," Artest said. "They said I was taunting and they said I shouldn't laugh like that after a basket." Thomas wasn't laughing despite his ever-present smile. He slammed his clipboard in disgust and was also assessed a technical. Sam Cassell made both free throws for the Bucks. "I got upset because Ron Artest was hit with that taunting foul when players from both teams were going back and forth the whole game," Thomas said. "I didn't think that was fair that Ron was singled out." With five minutes left, Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley received the third technical for arguing and Cassell again made the free throw. A 3-pointer by Toni Kukoc increased the lead to 69-62 with 4:57 left. The Bucks responded with a pair of technicals of their own in the quarter. After being whistled for a three-second violation, Anthony Mason picked up a technical with 3:57 left. Payton added to the madness when he taunted Artest after making a layup with 3:42 remaining. Artest made both technical free throws, and Jermaine O'Neal hit a short jumper to pull Indiana within 71-68 with 3:23 to go. But Milwaukee scored seven of the quarter's last nine points. Payton started the run with a pair of free throws with 2:52 left. After Al Harrington hit a running jumper for Indiana, Tim Thomas made a free throw, Michael Redd converted a 16-foot jumper and Thomas closed the quarter with a dunk, giving the Bucks a 78-70 lead. The Pacers got no closer than six points in the fourth quarter, the last time at 83-77 on a layup by Artest with 8:42 left. Cassell led the Bucks with 33 points on 11-of-18 shooting. His last basket, a 15-foot jumper, virtually sealed the win at 94-83. The Bucks held their biggest lead at 101-89 on a pair of free throws by Desmond Mason with 46 seconds left. The win was the seventh in eight games for the Bucks (41-40), who clinched the eighth and final berth in the East with a win over Toronto on Friday. "I am very happy with the game, other than it had a real ugliness to it," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Sam had an incredibly good night." Cassell scored 23 points in the first half and added 10 in the fourth quarter. "I think this team is very anxious to get to the playoffs to see how we play," Cassell said. "We're just beginning to gel as a team. We can come at you with a lot of different lineups and that makes us a dangerous team I think." Kukoc had 17 points off the bench and Redd added 13 for Milwaukee. O'Neal led the Pacers with 25 points, Artest finished with 23 and Harrington 20 off the bench. Each team went to the line 39 times, with the Bucks making 32 free throws and Pacers 28. Thomas benched Reggie Miller for most of the second half. Miller played just 13 minutes and took only two shots. "The game didn't appear close enough where we needed that type of offensive threat on the floor," Thomas said. "There were a couple of matchups where I thought he had difficulty with." Indiana's final two games are at New York on Tuesday and vs. New Jersey on Wednesday. "We have two more games before the playoffs start and we are still losing," O'Neal said. "Summer will come early if we don't start winning games."
