Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- After a meaningless season finale, the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics head into the most meaningful part of the season. Tony Delk scored 17 points and Paul Pierce added 12 in limited minutes as the playoff-bound Celtics posted a 99-92 victory over the top-seeded Pistons in the season finale for both teams. Detroit (50-32) had already clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference and Boston (44-38) had secured the sixth place, giving neither team any incentive to play their best. "When you clinch a seed and you can't move up or down, it's tough playing in games, especially when it doesn't really mean that much," Detroit guard Chauncey Billups said. Neither team knew who it would face in the first round until Wednesday evening's games were over. The Pistons will face the eighth-place Orlando Magic and the Celtics will open the postseason against the third-place Indiana Pacers. "I feel good about our basketball team," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "I think the Eastern Conference is wide open. I don't think anyone would be surprised of the lower seeds played well and advanced in the second round. There are going to be some great series." "It's an exciting time of year," Boston's Antoine Walker said. "Now, everybody starts 0-0. It's a new season and no matter who we play, we're going to be prepared and ready to go and make a run at it again." Boston never trailed in the second half despite playing without Pierce and fellow All-Star Walker in the fourth quarter. The Pistons pulled within 87-86 with 5:47 remaining, but Mark Blount made a jumper and two free throws around a basket from Walter McCarty to give the Celtics a 93-86 lead. Bimbo Coles made two jumpers in the final 2:15 as Boston snapped a three-game home losing streak. Blount collected 11 points and nine rebounds and Walker and Eric Williams added 10 points apiece for the Celtics, who shot 51 percent (38-of-74) from the floor. Boston also held a 51-36 rebounding advantage as Detroit played without All-Star center Ben Wallace - the league's leading rebounder - who is sidelined with a knee injury. Danny Manning scored a season-high 18 points and Corliss Williamson and rookie Tayshaun Prince added 13 apiece for the Pistons, who lost six of their last nine games. "I had some shots, my teammates game me some good passes," said Manning, who made 7-of-14 shots. "I was in a nice rhythm and I was able to knock down some shots. It's nice to be on the court and be able to make a contribution." Detroit did not end the season in strong fashion without Wallace but is still the top seed in the East for the first time since 1990, the year of its last championship. "It's a lot of pressure, but nobody thought that we'd be in this position when the season began," Billups said. "We've already exceeded a lot of people's expectations. Now, all of that means nothing. You've got to win basketball games and that's the bottom line."
