Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic may have won by losing. The Magic rested NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady in a season-ending 93-87 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks that dropped them into eighth place in the Eastern Conference - and perhaps a more favorable first-round matchup. The Magic and Bucks both finished with 42-40 records, but the Bucks claimed seventh place via the tiebreaker by winning eight of their last nine games. "The confidence and momentum we're gaining is immensely more important than the matchup," Bucks coach George Karl said. "I actually think our bracket is better for our personality. The bruisers are in the other bracket." Both teams draw division winners in the opening round. Milwaukee gets Atlantic Division champion New Jersey, which reached the NBA Finals last season. Orlando gets Central Division champion Detroit, which has All-Star forward Ben Wallace nursing a sprained MCL. Although the Pistons appear to be the more favorable matchup, the Magic were 1-2 against Detroit and 2-2 against New Jersey. "Either way, it was a tough matchup," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "But Detroit plays a very physical and defensive game. They're probably not the one we wanted." "It's going to be a big playoff series for myself because I've always been bounced in the first round," McGrady said. "In the playoffs, it's all up for grabs. We feel like we can beat anyone in the East in a seven-game series. The East is wide open." The Bucks went 3-1 against Detroit and 2-2 against New Jersey. "Ben Wallace is going to be in the lineup," said Bucks coach George Karl, whose team acquired Gary Payton and Desmond Mason in a huge midseason trade. "I didn't know who I wanted to play. We haven't played Detroit with the new crew yet and we've only played New Jersey once with the new crew." "No one wants Milwaukee in the first round," Rivers said. "They're not a seven seed. Hopefully, there will be some upsets." With McGrady resting a sore right ankle, the Bucks had a much easier time with the Magic. In two previous games against Milwaukee this season, McGrady scored 47 and 48 points. "He only averages 45 on us," Karl said. "We heard the rumbling he wasn't going to play, but not much surprises me anymore." Tim Thomas scored 21 points for the Bucks, who played without injured point guard Sam Cassell (sore thumb). Milwaukee had five players in double figures. Darrell Armstrong scored 15 points and rookie Pat Burke added 14 for the Magic, who made just 3-of-15 3-pointers and 6-of-9 free throws. The Bucks took the lead for good at 77-75 on a jumper by Michael Redd with 8:09 to play. Shawn Kemp's jumper cut the deficit to 82-81 with 3:53 remaining, but Thomas and Toni Kukoc sank baskets to make it 86-81 with three minutes left. After a hoop by Kemp, Redd drilled a 3-pointer for an 89-83 advantage with 2:26 to go. Kukoc added four free throws in the final minute to seal it. Mason had 19 points and 11 assists, Redd scored 18 points and Kukoc 12 for the Bucks, who shot 46 percent (38-of-82) and held a 45-34 rebounding edge. Payton had 11 points and 10 assists. Rookie Drew Gooden scored 13 points and Chris Whitney added 11 for the Magic, who shot 47 percent (39-of-83). "We were trying to pull it out," Rivers said. "If we got a win with these young guys, it would have given them an amazing amount of confidence."
