Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- After Paul Pierce fouled out, Mike James stepped up. James scored all 16 of his points in the second half, including a tiebreaking mid-range jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining, as the Celtics pulled out a 93-91 triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies, the last team to open their season. Pierce had another strong showing with 23 points before fouling out with 10 seconds remaining, which led to Pau Gasol's tying free throws. But the showings of James and Vin Baker, who combined for 40 points, was the difference in Boston's second straight victory. All three players were instrumental in getting Boston back into the game. Before James' big basket, Baker gave the Celtics their first lead with a layup that made it 66-65 late in the third period. Pierce scored eight points in a span of three-plus minutes that built the lead to 90-80 with just over four minutes remaining. But in the end it was James, who was playing his second game as a Celtic. Signed as a free agent after averaging 7.8 points in 78 games for Miami last season, James waited for Memphis point guard Jason Williams to drift away from him before he sank the shot. After Memphis called a timeout to set a final play, Gasol had trouble handling Williams' inbounds pass and time expired before he got off a shot. Pierce had 10 of his points in the final quarter. But he was on the bench when Baker and James were getting the Celtics back in it. After closing the third period with a 20-8 run to take a 70-69 lead, the Celtics used a 12-2 spurt to take their largest lead. Pierce returned from his rest and scored eight points during the fourth-quarter spurt. However, the Celtics could not close out the Grizzlies, who were trying to win their first season opener since moving from Vancouver after the 2000-01 season. Memphis reeled off seven straight points, highlighted by thunderous dunks from Stromile Swift and Posey. Baker split a pair from the line to make it 91-87 with 1:16 remaining. But on Memphis' next possession, Mike Miller blew by Kedrick Brown for a reverse layup. Pierce actually had a couple of chances to extend the lead but was called for an offensive foul with 53 seconds left and had a jumper blocked by Swift with 22 seconds to play. After Swift's block sent the crowd of 16,178 fans into a frenzy, Gasol sank two foul shots to forge a 91-91 tie with 10 seconds remaining. Playing their third home opener at the Pyramid, the Grizzlies shot just 37 percent (30-of-81), including a woeful 6-for-26 from the arc. Swift led the way with 18 points and Gasol added 16.
