Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- This time, Zach Randolph and Bonzi Wells directed their frustrations at the opponents. Randolph had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Wells scored 17 points as the Portland Trail Blazers bounced back from a poor performance on and off the court with a 93-87 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. During Monday's 94-83 home loss to Philadelphia, Randolph began jawing with a fan and Wells reportedly flashed an obscene gesture. It was a disappointing reminder of last season's squad, which had more than its share of off-court issues. In that game, the Trail Blazers trailed virtually the entire game. It was a complete reversal in this one as Portland never trailed, leading by as many as 22 points. "We definitely had a sense of urgency to beat this team and jump on this team and don't give them any type of confidence," Wells said. "I know coach is happy, but it is just one win." Wells and Randolph had a lot to do with the quick start, scoring 10 and six points, respectively, as the Trail Blazers raced to a 28-16 lead. Less than five minutes later, the advantage had been built to 42-20. "I thought Randolph played a great game," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "Twenty and 16 - the young man is really blossoming into a real force because he can get his shot off the dribble." "He's playing well, you know," Wells said. "Everybody is kinda keying on me or Sheed (Rasheed Wallace) and he is kind of sneaking in there." The Grizzlies dug themselves the early hole with poor shooting and never climbed out of it. They shot just 41 percent (33-of-81) and were beaten on the boards, 50-37. "We got our (rear) kicked right there on the glass," Brown said. The Trail Blazers also flashed some of their vaunted depth. Guard Derek Anderson remained sidelined with back spasms and forward Ruben Patterson went on the injured list with Achilles tendinitis prior to the game. But Jeff McInnis scored 10 points and fellow reserve Qyntel Woods added nine. "This was good for our confidence," Wells said. "DA's down, Ruben's down, but we have to step up our game and make up for the losses. "Our layup line was even looking pretty thin tonight," joked Wallace. Damon Stoudamire scored 13 points for the Blazers, who shot 46 percent (36-of-78). Wallace had nine points and 10 rebounds and Dale Davis added nine and nine. Pau Gasol and Mike Miller scored 19 points each for Memphis, which is 3-13 all-time in Portland. Two free throws by Woods gave Portland its largest lead with 7:10 left in the first half. The Trail Blazers led, 50-32, at halftime. "They played a great first quarter and put us in a hole," Brown said. "We couldn't get out of the hole by halftime." A 3-pointer by James Posey cut the deficit to 54-45 with 8:02 left in the third quarter before Portland rattled off nine of the next 11 points. The Grizzlies used a 12-2 run to close to 81-73 with 4:15 to play. Wallace hammered home a lob and Wells scored to make it 85-73 with 3:17 to play. "When we got it down to eight, we just needed a couple of stops, but they scored twice so that was it," Gasol said.
