Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady's best game of the season was wasted by another frustrating finish. Pau Gasol scored 28 points and James Posey added 24 as the Grizzlies posted a 107-97 victory over the struggling Magic, who got a season-high 36 points from McGrady but remained winless in six home games this season. McGrady has been inconsistent this season and entered the game shooting just 35 percent from the floor. He seemed to reverse his fortunes in this one, scoring 34 points on 13-of-20 shooting in the first three quarters. But the three-time All-Star disappeared in the final 12 minutes and had as many technical fouls as baskets, making just 1-of-6 shots. "I have a strained tendon in my foot," he said. "I felt pain before the game and it really got to me in the fourth quarter. After running on it the whole game, it kind of got stiff on me in the fourth quarter. I just didn't have it." "We just tried to make it tough for him and make him work," Memphis guard Shane Battier said. "That's about the best defense you can do. He's still going to hit shots. We're lucky he cooled off in the fourth." McGrady sank a finger roll with 6:47 left to give the Magic their last lead at 89-87. The Grizzlies responded with 15 consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Posey in the left corner. Gasol sparked the decisive run with a follow shot and Jake Tsakalidis made 1-of-2 free throws. Jason Williams followed with a long 3-pointer from the top of the circle and Posey made it 96-89 with 4:21 remaining. Battier made 1-of-2 free throws and McGrady missed a fallaway jumper at the other end. McGrady thought he was fouled on the play and was given a technical foul for arguing with 3:16 to go. "We're out there playing hard and trying to stay agressive and they're calling touch fouls on us, it gets frustrating," McGrady said. "That's why I got the tech. I felt like any time I went up to shoot, I was getting hit. The ref's didn't see it and the game's over." Williams missed the ensuing free throw, but Posey buried his second 3-pointer in 76 seconds. Gasol capped the decisive stretch with a jumper to give Memphis a 102-89 cushion with 2:10 remaining. "We were happy with our play down the stretch," Battier said. "I think it is the difference between last year and this year." Williams made 3-of-5 3-pointers en route to 11 points and dished out nine assists. Posey made 3-of-4 from 3-point range as Memphis went 9-of-19 from the arc. Former Grizzlie Drew Gooden had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Juwan Howard scored 14 points for the Magic, who have lost seven in a row since a season-opening road win against the New York Knicks. "I do think we're playing better," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I still believe in this team."
