Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Kenyon Martin is rounding into form and the New Jersey Nets are hoping their offense will follow suit. Martin collected 23 points and a season-high 14 rebounds and Jason Kidd scored 21 points as the Nets posted a 100-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Martin missed five games due to a sprained left ankle before returning for Wednesday's loss to San Antonio. He has responded with three straight double-doubles and helped New Jersey reach the 100-point mark for the first time this year. "We played well tonight," Martin said. "It was a total team effort. We found each other when we needed to. That was the type of game we needed to play in order to win, especially on back-to-back nights." Kidd added eight assists as New Jersey took advantage of Atlanta's sloppy defense to run its "Princeton" offense to perfection. Richard Jefferson added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the Nets, whose back cuts produced numerous openings in the defense. "We made some tough shots," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Offensively, we just stayed organized and staying organized was the biggest key." New Jersey ended the first half on a 14-6 run, building a 49-40 advantage. Alonzo Mourning scored six of his 10 points in the tear, all from the foul line. "It was huge for us when he got to the line and knocked those down," Martin said. "That's what we need." Jason Terry scored 24 points for Atlanta, which shot 38 percent (29-of-76). The Hawks have lost eight of their last 11 to the Nets. Martin completely overwhelmed Atlanta's Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who was 3-of-12 for 12 points. Dion Glover, who scored 45 points in his last two games, netted 13 on 4-of-10 shooting. "We came down and we'd miss our transition jumpers and they'd make their transition jump shots," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "It seemed like when they needed baskets, someone stepped up and made it and we couldn't do the same." The Nets' offense was in high gear in the fourth quarter, shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) and creating frequent trips to the foul line, converting 10-of-11 attempts. New Jersey had a pair of layups and dunks in the period, including a jam by Martin off an alley-oop feed from Kidd for an 87-70 cushion with just over seven minutes to go. The Hawks' sloppiness resulted in 14 turnovers, which the high-octane Nets turned into 24 points. Martin's big night resulted in the Nets holding a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint. "He's been awesome since I've been here," Kidd said. "It seems like he hasn't missed a beat. He's come back strong."
