Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic suffered their latest beating on the boards. Andrei Kirilenko had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Harpring added 14 and a career-high 19 as the Utah Jazz sent the Magic to their 10th consecutive loss, 90-88. Orlando has lost 10 consecutive games since a season-opening win over the New York Knicks - the second-longest streak in franchise history. The Magic's only other double-digit slide was a franchise-record 17-game streak from December 4, 1991-January 7, 1992. "Right now I don't think we've reached expectations, obviously," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I think the players are working hard and that's all you can ask for. We're just not winning games. "It's tough right now and it's not going to get any easier. We're going to have to make our own breaks. No one is going to give it to us." Orlando has lost the first three games of a five-game road trip by just 10 points combined and was done in by its lack of rebounding against Utah, which held a commanding 52-31 edge on the glass and grabbed 23 offensive boards. "That's what we do," said Jazz center Greg Ostertag, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. "That's how we get a lot of our points. We have to crash the offensive boards because there are going to be times when our shots just aren't going to fall. We emphasize crashing the boards." "That was the difference in the game," Magic star Tracy McGrady said. "If you give a team that many opportunities at the basket, it will kill you." Kirilenko had eight offensive rebounds and Harpring and Ostertag each collected five, giving the Jazz numerous chance to put away the Magic. Carlos Arroyo, who had 16 points, gave Utah a 90-88 lead with two free throws with 29 seconds left. McGrady missed a jumper at the other end and Ostertag grabbed the rebound before giving the ball to Arroyo, who was fouled, but missed both free throws. McGrady drove to the hole before dishing to guard Derrick Dial, who launched a jumper that bounced off the rim and out of bounds with three seconds left. Orlando got another chance when Utah threw away the inbounds pass, but McGrady misfired on a fallaway 3-pointer at the buzzer. "I hate moral victories, but this team is coming along," McGrady said. "I see a lot of improvement. We just have to find a way to win games." "Both teams played hard," Harpring said. "I just think we wanted it a little bit more and we had more energy at the end of the game." McGrady finished with 29 points and Juwan Howard added 21 off the bench for the Magic, who have lost 11 of 15 all-time visits to the Delta Center. Orlando guard Gordan Giricek played for the first time since October 30, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including a game-tying jumper with 45 seconds left. McGrady scored 12 points in the second quarter for the Magic, who had their largest lead at 44-31 with 4:12 to go. The Jazz quickly got back in the game with a 12-2 run as Kirilenko and Arroyo had four points apiece. Orlando had an 80-73 after Dial buried a 3-pointer with 8:58 left, but Utah scored 12 of the next 15 points. The Jazz outrebounded the Magic, 9-2, during the spurt, and had an 86-83 lead after Kirilenko made two free throws with 3:35 left.
