Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks once again showcased their depth and Steve Nash made a little history in the process. Nash recorded the first triple-double at the American Airlines Center as the Mavericks placed five in double figures en route to a 105-98 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Mavericks are averaging 98.9 points through 11 games and have six players that average at least 10 points per contest. Nash, Dirk Nowitzi, Antoine Walker, Tony Delk, Antawn Jamison and Michael Finley have the double-digit averages and while Delk didn't play due to a knee injury, the other five all had at least 10 points as Dallas improved to 5-0 at home. But Nash played the biggest role as he registered his first career triple-double. In the 87th regular-season game in the building, Nash finished with 14 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. He also keyed an 18-6 run in the second half that helped the Mavericks rally from a 14-point deficit. With the coaching staff urging him on, Nash rebounded Portland's Damon Stoudamire's missed 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds remaining. "There's no way I couldn't have known about it," Nash said. "They kept telling me to go for another rebound because they know I might not ever have a chance to get it again. I was trying not to make a big deal of it but they kept telling me about it. "I have to admit it's a big thrill for me. To get it in a big win at home was very special." Dallas faced Portland for the first time since Game Seven of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs and outscored the Trail Blazers, 59-48, over the final 24 minutes. "I wouldn't have known he had a triple-double until I looked at the stat sheet," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "I thought he made shots when he had to. He'd make a driving layup and then he'd make a three. I think he took over the game at certain points, then the other guys got involved." Portland got going by dominating inside. The Trail Blazers hit six of seven shots to take a 67-53 lead midway through the third quarter and Nowitzki was on the bench having missed six of his first eight shots. But Dallas hit three consecutive 3-pointers and Nowitzi came back as Dallas forged a 73-73 tie with 1:29 remaining. The Mavericks took a 77-74 advantage into the fourth and couldn't put Portland away until Nash converted a three-point play with 2:52 to play. "We did a tremendous job and we did it quickly," Jamison said. "We don't like to put ourselves in those situations but we know sometimes we can come back from them. Steve Nash took over the game during that stretch. He and Mike hit some shots and that got everyone going." Finley led Dallas with a season-high 25 points and Jamison scored 16 of his 20 in the first half to keep the Mavericks in the game. Rasheed Wallace scored 31 points and Zach Randolph added 25 for Portland, which dropped its third straight road game.
