Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers tagged the Los Angeles Clippers with their first defeat on American soil this season. Davis scored 27 points and James finished with 14, eight assists and seven rebounds as the Cavaliers built a big lead before hanging on for a 103-95 victory over the Clippers. Los Angeles opened its season with a pair of losses to Seattle in Japan before ripping off four straight victories upon returning to the United States. But the Clippers came out flat Tuesday, ending any hopes they may have had of recording their first five-game winning streak in over eight years. Cleveland bolted to a 17-4 lead, including five points from former Clipper Darius Miles. Los Angeles shot a woeful 14 percent (4-of-28) in the first quarter as the Cavaliers took a 25-14 lead after 12 minutes and led by as many as 28 points in the game. "Obviously, I would have liked to taken the first half and thrown it away and start the game 24 minutes later," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. Reserve Chris Mihm scored a career-high 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go with nine rebounds and Miles netted 11. Cleveland has won two straight for the second time this season and four straight at home. "We've taken big steps from last year," Davis said. "We're finishing games this year." The Cavaliers were more athletic and active on this night, resulting in easy dunks by Davis and James. The pair hooked up for one alley oop in the third quarter in which Davis threw his pass off the glass, but James put it home anyway. "I was a little tired at the end, but I knew I was helping my teammates win and that's all I care about," James said. "It's been showing in practice and now it's starting to transfer into the games." That dunk drew an amused facial expression from Davis, who was upset a few moments later when he was the victim of a hard foul by Corey Maggette. Davis punted the ball into the stands, resulting in a technical. Cleveland held a 52-34 advantage in points in the paint as Zydrunas Ilgauskas collected 13 points and 10 rebounds. Miles also set the tone on defense with four blocks. "We knew we could get back into the game, but we ran out of gas," Los Angeles forward Quentin Richardson said. "You can't afford to give anybody in the NBA those kinds of leads to start off like that." The Clippers finished the night at 32 percent (30-of-94) from the floor. Maggette collected 19 points and eight rebounds despite misfiring on 14-of-18 shots.
