Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- David Wesley hit his two biggest shots from each side of the court. Wesley sunk a pair of huge 3-pointers in the final five minutes as the New Orleans Hornets matched a season high with their third straight victory, an 88-85 triumph over the New Jersey Nets. Wesley, who finished with 20 points, gave New Orleans the lead for good at 82-81 with a 3-pointer from the left wing with five minutes left. He added another shot from beyond the arc off a cross-court feed from Davis with 2:10 to go for an 88-83 cushion. "It came open even better than I thought," Wesley said. "They doubled the ball and when I came off the weak side, if he (Davis) could just get it over here, I'm wide open and I just (have to) get myself together and knock the shot down." Those were the final points of the night for New Orleans, which held New Jersey to just one basket in the final seven minutes. The Nets had three chances to tie in the final 16 seconds, but New Orleans native Kerry Kittles missed a pair of 3-pointers and Richard Jefferson's attempt with two seconds left was not even close. The Hornets backcourt of Wesley and Baron Davis got the better of Nets duo Kittles and Jason Kidd throughout the contest. Davis was just shy of a triple-double with 25 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. "We've been doing it all season," Davis said. "When we outplay the opposing guards, we usually win and that's what happened today." Jefferson scored 16 points and Kittles netted 14 for New Jersey, which fell to 2-4 at home. The Nets were 33-8 at home last season, the best mark in the Eastern Conference. "It looks like a team that thinks when we are down, we can turn it on when we want to," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "If we continue to think that way, we are going to have an up and down season." New Jersey shot only 18 percent (3-of-17) in the fourth quarter, finishing with 12 points, and have yet to score more than 85 points at home this year. The bruising Hornets also hammered the Nets on the glass, 50-38. George Lynch grabbed 17 boards and Jamaal Magloire added 12. "I really thought that this game was about the back line," New Orleans coach Tim Floyd said. "George Lynch, P.J. Brown and Jamaal Magloire were on the defensive boards and they helped stop the penetration." New Orleans led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, settling for a 30-21 advantage. New Jersey finally got its game untracked in the second, registering eight fast-break points and scoring 33 in the period. The 33-point second quarter eclipsed the Nets' output the rest of the game. Kidd managed only two points and four assists after halftime and netted a season-low six points.
