Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The guy they call "Q" showed his "A" game. Qyntel Woods scored seven of his 11 points in the final three minutes, fueling a fourth-quarter rally that lifted the Portland Trail Blazers to a 94-93 victory over the Miami Heat. A second-year forward who never played at a Division I college, Woods has been buried on Portland's deep bench. But with forward Bonzi Wells serving the first of a two-game suspension, the minutes were there for Woods, and he made the most of them. "It's good for me because it lets me play, but we need Bonzi in the lineup," Woods said. "He gives the team the best chance to win." The Heat blew a 12-point lead in the final five minutes but reclaimed a 93-92 advantage with 9.9 seconds left on a nifty lefthanded layup by rookie Dwyane Wade, who scored a season-high 24 points. Portland's Jeff McInnis missed a jumper, but Woods beat Lamar Odom to the rebound and drew a foul with 0.4 seconds to play. The 22-year-old calmly sank both shots, and Miami's last-gasp lob attempt bounced away. "Usually that play is not called a foul unless the guy makes the basket," Odom said. "It's a tough call," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "You don't normally see games decided on those kinds of calls in the NBA." Woods came into the game having made just 13-of-27 free throws in his brief career. But he sank 7-of-10, including 5-of-6 around a thunderous dunk in the final three minutes. "I just took my time and made sure I made both shots for the win," Woods said. "I was confident he was going to make them," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. Rasheed Wallace had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Zach Randolph added 17 and 10 for the Trail Blazers, who improved to 6-1 at home. Eddie Jones scored 26 points for the Heat, who fell to 1-7 on the road. His 3-pointer made it 86-74 with under five minutes to play, but the Trail Blazers switched to a zone and began their comeback. "I hate the zone," Cheeks said. "It worked for us tonight, though, so I think I am falling in love with it." "We didn't attack their zone like we should have," Jones said. "In the fourth quarter, we became a perimeter-oriented team." Two 3-pointers by Damon Stoudamire and one by Wallace cut the deficit to 89-86 with 2:13 left. Just over a minute later, Woods went past Odom for a dunk and added two free throws, making it 91-90. Wallace gave Portland the lead with a turnaround lane jumper with 23 seconds to play.
