Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker and the Dallas Mavericks remained impressive at home. Walker collected a season-high 25 points, 14 rebounds and six assists as the Mavericks defeated the Denver Nuggets, 115-101, to improve to a league-best 7-0 at home. Antawn Jamison added a season-best 24 points off the bench, Dirk Nowitzki had 19 and 11 rebounds and Steve Nash tied a season high with 18 points for Dallas, which extended its winning streak against Denver to nine games and has taken the last 13 meetings at home. The Mavericks trailed, 77-75, with just over two minutes left in the third quarter before embarking on a 20-5 run that spanned 5 1/2 minutes. Walker made a layup with 1:56 to go in the period to put Dallas ahead for good, 79-77, then followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover. Nowitzki ended the burst with a 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter for a 95-82 cushion. "We had a couple of breakdowns defensively, and offensively we had a couple of breakdowns as well," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "That is just enough to give a team like Dallas the edge they need at home to pull away." Dallas gave up 28 fast-break points in the first half but just four thereafter. "I wanted to be more aggressive offensively as far as not just being able to score but just to put some pressure on them," Walker said. "I think tonight we didn't have it going defensively. We let them get out in transition." To give his team a spark, Mavericks coach Don Nelson started the second half with his "Big Five" of Walker, Jamison, Nowitzki, Nash and Michael Finley, who finished with 12 points. Dallas improved to 6-0 when all five reach double figures. "I was kind of surprised when (Nelson) said I was going to start the second half, and we just started clicking, especially defensively," Jamison said. "We made it tough for those guys. ... That just shows you what we can do when we get some time playing together." "It was a really good second half," Nelson added. "I was very displeased in the first half. We made a change in the second half because we felt that was the way to win the game." Andre Miller scored 22 points, Jon Barry added a season-high 20 off the bench and rookie Carmelo Anthony chipped in 16 and 10 rebounds for Denver, which has not won in Dallas since April 19, 1997. "(Anthony) is a very young player, he is 19 years old," Bzdelik said. "He is consistently rebounding the ball for us. He is trying to defend. He is learning and I think he is doing great." "He is a good-looking young kid and he is really athletic," Nelson said of Anthony. "He has a great future." The Nuggets played for the fourth time in five days and used a 35-point second quarter to take a 60-54 halftime lead. "Maybe (fatigue was a factor) a little," Anthony said. "I don't know how the other players feel, but I feel pretty good. I don't feel sluggish or anything."
